Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Something tells me Lance won't be there.

And a pet peeve: Why do so many races use 'de' instead of 'of' in their 'tours?' The 'Tour de Georgia' is, I think, the most egregious. What does Georgia have to do with the French language? At least the Koreans are pulling all of it from other languages.

Actually, the French originally settled Georgia after the Spanish left due to their inability to settle the land profitably, and the French still have ancestral and political roots in Georgia.

O.K., that is completely fictitous history, and I have no logical explanation as to why The Tour of Georgia uses "de."

They wish they were French.

I heard they renamed Freedom Fries 'French Fries' because they hated America so much.

Seriously, Georgia is about as un-French as you can get. (and was settled as a British penal colony!)

Every operator I worked with in GA knew fluent French. At least that's what my mother calls it.

They list Discovery/Marco Polo as a team... maybe they have permission? Grasping at straws.

"de" is spanish, also. For example, it's perfectly appropriate here for the Tour De Tucson. Of course, everyone pronounces it as if it were french, but at least the written version is correct.

Maybe it's an effort to appeal to the US' growing Hispanic demographic... "de" is also Spanish, you know...

Well I certainly don't begrudge the Vuelta de España for that very reason.

Somehow I imagine the hispanic cycling community in Tucson to not be terribly huge.

And how can you have a tour of a single city? A tour is a stage race.

I just think the English-speaking nations of the world should stick with the good old 'of' - using 'de' is just cashing in on the visibility of the Tour de France as the only cycling race that the general public will probably know of.

Ok, except it's the "Vuelta a Espana" aka "La Vuelta".

And it's the Giro d'Italia, or il Giro.

That was some cafeteria in Washington DC that served mostly federal employees and politicians.

It's just humor, as in the Tour de Donut held at several places. The more bugtussley the place sounds, the funnier it is to put "Tour de" in front of it.

Actually Lance was there - Tour de Korea 2007 (the OP's listing an archived site). The organizers of that race paid Lance to come and promote it. Probably why his photos are up there.

Well. It would look pretty stupid being called "El Tour of Tucson" .
