Ugh so I have a SRAM cassette?!
 

I got bored and took my back wheel off my Trek 1500 which is a grab bag of 105,Ultegra and Tiagra. As I was cleaning the cassette for the first time i notice right on the black plastic ring on the front of it in big letters it said SRAM! What the hell? This bike was supposed to be all Shimano, I don't really care that its a SRAM product as much as it means i have SRAM compatible wheels right? So if I buy a new set of wheels I have to buy a new cassette if I want shimano compatible wheels, or am I totally wrong on this.

I`m pretty sure SRAM and Shimano are compatible...

I always see wheels for sale and it says SRAM, CAMPY or Shimano compatible, are shimano and sram the same and campy is different?

Yes. SRAM and Shimano wheels and cassettes are caompatible with one another.

sram has the same freewheel pattern as shimano. they are interchangeable. campy is different.

basically, you can get new wheels that say shimano compatabile, and they will work with you sram cassette. you could get a new shimano cassette, and they will work with your old wheels.

I don't think i've seen a treck under $1500 yet with a shimanno cassette on it.

My 1600 has (had) a 105 cassette.

My bike was supposed to come with all 105 but it ended up coming with 105 shifters tiagra FD ultegra RD ultegra octalink cranks a shimano chain and apparently a sram cassette. It's got the ultegra/105 where it counts.

Heh... that's kinda like mine right now except that yours is even more diverse. Mine's got 105 crank, FD, RD & shifters, Ultegra BB & chain, SRAM cassette.

You say SRAM like its a dirty word. They make very nice cassettes. Especially the Red one...

No don't get me wrong I have NO problem with SRAM, I'll be looking into them when i build up my next bike, right now I have very little knowledge of groupo they all seem awesome to me at this point.

yeah, nothing wrong with SRAM cassettes. The cheapest 10sp SRAM road cassettes are also way more expensive than 105 or ultegra too, so you're not losing out.

The only issue with sram cassettes would be if you got a 10sp only tall profile spline hub like DA-7800 had. You're in the clear with DA-7850 freehub or any other 8/9/10 freehubs with low profile splines.

It's a 9 speed SRAM cassette.

It's probably a PG950 powerglide 9spd cassette. I used them with my old 105 setup on my cross bike for a while. Solid cassette - it'll keep the bike moving forward. Don't sweat it.

Glad to know it will work with shimano hubs, that was my only worry.

Mixing components is not uncommon. I've been looking at mountain bikes, and the Epic Marathon has a SRAM X.0 setup, except for the the FD which is Shimano. Seemed strange to me, but apparently the SRAM FD's have issues. I'm not surprised, as I have some with mine on my Tarmac :notamused:

I was actually just cleaning my 1500 real nice and saw that too. I was surprised.

I've got a 1500 as well, and I didn't know I had SRAM on there. Nice to know they're compatible though.

Exactly the same for me.

I would rather have SRAM cassettes and chains. More a matter of preference than anything.

It does, and no reason not to get one next time you replace your chain. They work fine on Shimano.

for 9sp shimano/sram drivetrain... sram 9sp chain is tough to beat.
but for 10sp... that performance/nashbar chain is a better deal.
