Sorry Guys...Even The Best Cyclists Don't Make The Top Ten...

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If A-Rod is a great athlete, it's probably wasted in his sport.

These "best of" lists are crap. Notice that they managed to get 10 different sports represented?

How about the 400m? Wariner is amazing, but in terms of the criteria listed, I'm not sure how he qualifies.

Probably appropriate that the decathlete won, but yeah, trying to compare the other athletes to one another makes little sense. The skills / abilities / etc. required are just so different.

It seems they weighted more heavily to running type activities. Crosby and hockey just snuck in there.

No running = one dimensional sport to them.

Oh well, at least cycling gets in nod in their Stamina and Recovery section (under Performance Criteria).

None of them were Aerobic/Endurance sports by nature. No marathon runners, no swimmers, no cyclists. Evidently they were just going for the sprint and rest type sports.

Notice: one of the judges was Ed Coyle.

let's revisit this in the coming weeks after the New York Times publishes their story.

"Panelists said hockey requires a level of endurance and strength that would put any golfer to shame."

Sounds like pcad could get a job writing for these guys.

Oh, and criteria is plural. You mean criterion.

Not only that, but they discounted hockey because they "don't necessarily run well." Who cares? Skating is an unnatural human movement that requires precision motor control and years of practice to master, and then you have to try to play a game while doing it and you're faced with a squad of goons trying to crush you.

Mainstream sports media have made Tiger Woods out to be a hero because he tees off with a hidden broken leg. Hockey players will have their faces sewn back on between periods.

Mainstream sports media always pander to the marketable sports and cannot be taken as an impartial judge of athletics.

Footballers apparently run about 10 kms per game. That's the most of any of the "ball" sports.

Indeed. Very 2002 of them. And as for "strength of competition", there're a lot of niche sports by global standards on that list...(American) football especially.

No. Aussie rules players run about twice that far, most of it at full tilt.

How about MMA fighters?
Cardio, tactics, training, injuries, pressure, all while getting punched and kicked.

Who is "Condor"?

Note that one of the judges was Eric Heiden. He knows a thing or two about cycling.

I was surprised that Michael Phelps did not make the list.
