Worn grooves into Crank Brothers Quattro spindles?
 

Anyone else have this issue?

For the longest time I've thought I was having problems with my bottom bracket having a bit of play. It turns out the creaks I've been hearing are caused partially by the internal housing in my carbon frame but mostly by the pedal platform sliding up and down the pedal spindle.

I took it apart yesterday and found the ti spindle, which is anodized(?) gold, is worn through to bare ti on two sides. Anyone else have this issue? Do you think this could be the cause of the creaking noise that reverberates loudly on my frame?

Considering switching to Speedplay, and avoiding titanium.

So I get it. No one has problems with their ti Quattro pedals. Anyone have issues with worn ti spindles in general? It seems all the high-end pedals use this material.

Sounds like time for a rebuild kit. $15 at your LBS.

Switch pedals. I've seen two Quattros break off at the spindle, which isn't much fun in any situation, especially in a sprint.

You could switch pedals as Doc Who stated but to be honest I've seen a couple of speedplays and and Times break at the spindle as well (non-ti). If your close to the max weight limit and a real masher I might consider new pedals but if your not no reason to give up a nice set just because they need maintenance/TLC. If you have side to side play in the Quattros, a rebuild will shore that up. I had the same issue with my 4Ti Quattos. And yes the gold is anodization and it does wear off at the pedal body contact points (If there is no side to side play it could also be time for new cleats).

The bearings and seals are fine. It's the spindle that is worn.

Yeah, I tried out my girlfriend's Speedplays and really liked them. More stable in out-of-saddle efforts.

I'm pretty far from the limit at 142 lbs. However the wear is pretty severe. The spindles are now eliptical; almost a 1mm deficit where it's narrowest. I'm sure this is where the play comes from, but replacing the spindle will cost $160—the cost of a brand new stainless pedal.

How many miles? How old? Contact Crankbrothers.. they have great CS and can tell you if it's normal. Warranty lasts for a year from them.
