Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized S-Works Festina team Allez experience and opinions, and is this a deal?

Hello,

Yes, I seek more advice on used bike. This forum has been very helpful thus far.

The bike is a 2000 Specialized S-Works Festina team, for $1200. Frame is Aluminum (Columbus E5 SLX), with a carbon fork. It has a medley of components on it. Ksyrium Elite wheelset, and a bunch of newly replaced stuff. I will just copy the component list from the ad:
Frame: Aluminium
Fork: Carbon
Shifters/Brake Levers: Campagnolo Veloce *NEW
Brakes: Campagnolo Veloce Skeleton *New
Deraileurs: Campagnolo Veloce *New
Cassette: Campagnolo Veloce 13-26 *New
Crank: Campagnolo Centaur Ultratorque Alloy 53/11 *New
Bottombracket: Campagnolo Record *New
Seatpost: Thomson
Stem: 3T
Bar: Ritchey Pro 42
Tape: Cinelli *New
Saddle: Comfy Specialized!
Wheels: Mavic Ksyrium Elite
Tires: Continental Ultra Sport *New
Pedals: Look Keo Sprint
Cables/Housing: Campagnolo Ergopower *New

You guessed it, if it says new beside the component, it is a new component!

Considering this bike would have the same time period before parts need to be replaced as a new bike (all the stuff that wears was replaced, tires, chain, cassete, et al).

Pics:

So, would you say this is a good price? I realize people in my last thread were reluctant to spend $1200 on a four year old aluminum frame, while this is twice the age. However, it seems like a great frame nonetheless (it was $2800 new, I think it is analogous to the current Tarmac SL2).

Does anyone own this bike, or another with the E5 SLX tubing? Do you think a new veloce/centaur gruppo is too low end for the price?

$900. For the record, it's not Campagnolo Record bottom bracket, it's just called Campagnolo Bottom Bracket Cup, the Record group all the way down to Mirage uses the same bottom bracket cup.

$1000, tops. Had the same frame before, pretty good overall but harsh rides.

So $1200 would be a bit of a ripoff? Since he replaced many of the components I think he is trying to recoup some of the costs and isn't willing to go down to $900, and very likely not even to $1000. His asking price was $1400. In other words, assuming the wheels are still perfect, would $1200 be regarded as fair, or too high?

Veloce is roughly equivalent to/slightly higher than 105, right?

Thanks for the help

The new price of a Veloce group is around 600$ at best. I don't think it is a rip off, but you might be able to get a bit lower.

But a Festina team replica? That would be pretty cool...

I don't think it's a terrible deal-Krysium Elites are 500 or so, Veloce Groupset is 450ish, and then on top of all that you get decent pedals, bars, post etc... and you're at 1200ish without the frame, which is supposed to be decent. For 1200 you can get other stuff, like Cannondale, but this isn't a bad frame.

Although keep in mind that the Ksyriums are not new, same as the frame, etc. (as seen in list).

Is there any risk that the frame was fatigued/work-hardened over time?
