Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1997 Campy Record Front Brake "Help"

Need a little help on this one. Went riding this morning and all of a sudden my front brake is hanging off the fork. I noticed that the nut that holds the brake to the fork disappeared. Mt question is this:

When placing the brake over the tire and the bolt into the fork I noticed that the bolt doesn't go all the way through to the outside of the fork to attach a nut. I am not sure if I seared off the bolt and that's why it broke away or if the nut broke off and the brake caliper if fine. When I place the bolt through the fork now the bolt is 2 1/4" long and the end of the bolt is inside the fork which seems strange to me but I can't remember how its supposed to look.

Any pictures or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The brake uses a recessed nut attachment. The nut is long and goes into the fork from the rear and threads onto the screw that comes out of the brake. This is the common arrangement since the mid1980s. Somehow you lost the recessed nut. Perhaps it was loose and vibrated out? Anyways, so far as I know the threading is universal so just go to the LBS and tell them you need a recessed nut for a front brake. Shouldn't be more than a buck.

This link will get you started on brake systems. Just follow his links and read the entry on "Short Reach" as well.

Hi Walter,
Wow, thanks for the advice and I did look at some pictures and you are right on. I really appreciate it and when I looked at the bolt I noticed the end of the bolt having dirt on it so I figured that something came off. Thanks again
