Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road bike for a 14 year old

My daughter has decided she would like a road bike to ride through the hills with her Mom! Today we tried her out on the road bikes we have. My Trek 5000 WSD 51cm is too small. Her dad's Trek 5200 60cm is too big. So I'm thinking I need to get her a new one for her birthday. I'm not sure I want to start on the expensive Treks for a kid who's still growing, and who hasn't started riding hills yet. The LBS we got our bikes from carries Trek, Bianci, Orbea, Time, Serotta, and Scott. They don't list prices, are any of those in the $700 range? Any other suggestions?

Almost all road bike brands will carry entry level bicycles between $500-$900. One good bicycle is the Jamis Ventura Sport, MSRPs for about $550 and carries Sora.

You could do bikesdirect.com and amazon if you know what to look for.

And I thought girls end their growth spurt around 12-16... then again IANAD.

Bianchi Via Nirone! Great color, great bike, great teenager bike! (I have one, I'm fifteen, great bike for any age, but it looks so darn cool) Plus, last years models are on sale.

Great call!! We went out looking at bikes. The first LBS had nothing under 1K and that was a Bianchi Cyclocross that she wasn't wild about. Second LBS was the winner. Had many kinds of bike, including the Pilot WSD 1.2, in the pretty colors that fit her. (For less than $700, yeah!!!).

She raced me the 5.1 miles home today and just took it out to show her friends.
