Questions about good sunglasses

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have the Smith V-Ti

https://www.smithoptics.com/V-ti_30_234.html

I bought them primarily for mountain biking, as the lenses completely enclose my eye area. Great protection. The frame comes with three lenses: polarized platinum, Ignitor, and clear mirror. The clear lens is great in the woods, for eye protection without affecting visibility. The Ignitor is great on overcast, flat light days. The polarized platinum is more for snow and sand, with bright sun. Changing lenses is easy - I can keep a spare in my jersey pocket if I'm going to be riding in the woods and then out in a meadow, for instance.

On the down side, they're crazy expensive. And the Smith lettering at the bottom of the lens is sort of annoying at first, but you get used to it.

Not to start a war here, but please define "nice"? If my "Lowes-Ball" specials are comfortable, clear, protect my eyes from UV and from impacts, are $99.00 Oakleys or Wiley-X's or whatever worth the extra $91.00?

Excuse the pun, but I just can't see it - I go for function, not bling.

I guess this is just part of the whole OCP thing that I don't get. I guess it's as important to be seen as it is to see.

In general, "nice" sunglasses have superior fit and optics.

That's not to say it's impossible to find reasonably-priced, well-made sunglasses. Nor expensive crap.

"Nice" sunglasses feel lighter on the face, and in my experience stay nice longer. If your Lowes glasses are "nice" to you, then that's all that matters. But have you actually tried some real sports glasses? They aren't even all expensive, brands like Serfas, Tifosi, etc. made nice glasses for prices as low as $30 or so.

I got a new pair of RX glasses at a store here in town called All about Eyes. As a joke they gave me a right yellow "racing" glasses with yellow tinted lenses. They have the little air vents in the bottom of the senses and side of the temples. Little did I know when I got them they would be AMAZING riding glasses. SO price does not really matter at all! That being said, I found a pair of ruby tinted Oakleys (am not sure what kind because I found them) and they are equally as amazing and only slightly more comfortable. I think it is all in what YOU (the rider) likes and prefers!

I got a pair of Oakley Flak Jackets w/ employee discount at my LBS. Probably couldn't justify paying retail ($140) for them, but they're nice anyway.

Some kind of Oakleys my wife got me free through her work. Couldn't tell you the model, but I really do like them and also take better care of them than I would my other sunglasses.

I have had Oakleys for all my life and will never switch. They are great sunglass's even know some people feel their are a little over priced. Great thing is Oakley controls market pricing so they will be the same price no matter were you get them so you wont get ripped off.

I currently ride with a set of half jackets that are black with the standard black lense. They give a great view and dont darken your view that much. They keep the wind out of your eyes and the bugs off your eye lids ha. One suggestion would be to look at the flat jackets which are the brothers to the half jacket. The half jackets arms are angled out with a edge so it will push your helmet straps to the side which some people find anoying. The flat jackets have the same viewing angle just the arms are flat but either set I find are great. Best thing to do is go try on a couple pairs because I have found some frames just dont fit everyone. Like M frames look horriable on me so I uses the halfjackes or small lense frames.
