Shimano sora groupset?

Anyone got one. Im looking for a new group set and this is the only one is my price range (only if its second hand).

Wested 07-02-08 05:47 PM

I had one a while back. If you are a light rider, then it should be fine. But if you do anything long, it wears out pretty quickly and needs adjustment. Rear derailleur tends to go out of adjustment pretty often, unfortunately. Shifters are o.k., but you can't really control them from the drops.

MedicMan55 07-02-08 05:59 PM

Save some money, and buy some used 105. I'm very pleased with how my grouppo holds up.

ShadowGray 07-02-08 06:01 PM

I wouldn't go lower than tiagra... those thumb triggers on the sora will kill you.

YoUnG_RiDeR_31 07-02-08 06:16 PM

I seriously cant buy anything more expensive then sora.

ShadowGray 07-02-08 06:18 PM

What are you running now then? Sora's pretty much the lowest group, well slightly higher than 2200 but that's about it.

It gets the job done, but there ain't nothing special...

YoUnG_RiDeR_31 07-02-08 06:30 PM

Some crappy shimano thumb trigger things

ShadowGray 07-02-08 06:43 PM

Well, Sora isn't really an upgrade to anything... what bike do you have? There might not even be much of an upgrade going to Sora, and you may have to end up changing more than you expected.

YoUnG_RiDeR_31 07-02-08 06:45 PM

Just some crappy cheapo, does the job. I was just looking for a new groupset for now until i can upgrade the wheels, frame and so on

ShadowGray 07-02-08 06:47 PM

I would just keep riding what you have until you can afford to get the entire thing. Sora isn't much of a groupset, save up until you can get at least a tiagra-equipped bike.

YoUnG_RiDeR_31 07-02-08 06:48 PM

That will seriously be years away. I'm 15 and unemployed

rizz 07-02-08 06:56 PM

The thumb shift isn't half bad and it's pretty nice when riding on the hoods. If you're on the drops every time you go out riding, then it may not be the best choice.

ShadowGray 07-02-08 07:01 PM

Eh, I tried brifters and I can never go back to thumb triggers.

In any case, I'm 17 and I paid for my own bike, you can get a tiagra+ bike for 500 if you look for good deals/used.

Go get a job already!

hendrick81 07-02-08 07:07 PM

buy used 105

ridethecliche 07-02-08 07:12 PM

Go get a job to feed the addiction. I worked when I was 15 (I'm 19 now). I paid for all my guitars and stuff with that money when I was working in early high school. Worked at a Pizza place as a cook and dishwasher. Seriously, it's worth it if you can keep your grades up and still do the extracurriculars you are currently doing.

YoUnG_RiDeR_31 07-02-08 07:23 PM

Getting a job in my town is alot easier said then done. Theres about 10 shops.Pretty much all of them have hired kids so they dont need any more workers and the rest of the jobs are only to skilled adults. But thats the negative attitude,i can get work with my dad fencing, dairy farming milking etc

kudude 07-02-08 07:24 PM

what's your budget, and current bike? give us a number

if you have trigger shifters, do you have a flat bar? If you do, then sora isn't for you.

Billsteak 07-02-08 07:30 PM

Sora

I have Sora on my Giant OCR3 and I cannot recommend it. My wife has Tiagra and it feels worlds better. Save a little longer for the Tiagra which works pretty well actually.

Wested 07-02-08 07:33 PM

Yeah man, it's summer time. No school. You're supposed to have a job.

saintsfan342000 07-02-08 07:58 PM

Start mowing lawns or selling lemonade.

Yeah but with the price of gas you'd need to sell lemonade just to be able to power your lawnmower.

MrCrassic 07-02-08 09:38 PM

A Tiagra or 105 groupset should cost you a little over 100 dollars. You might want to save up if you can because unless you do some seriously light riding, you will have to replace Sora soon.

There's no time for such trivial pursuits. Carpe Diem, baby!
