Training for mountains with no mountains!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Correct. Never been to Italy, haven't been to the parts of France that have mountains that look like that.

I have a friend who lives on Cape May, NJ and trains for hills by riding his MTB in the sand. He does a 10 day tour every July and I've seen him take on hills that crush most people.

That's the last section of Mont Ventoux, it's almost disappointing once your that close to the top, I loved that climb. It is a very odd thing to climb up a mountain on a desolate road for 1 1/2 hours to find a souvenir shop at the summit. I bought a Coke and headed back down to go back from another angle.

I assume you're going to Spain, not to compete but just for some riding. If so, there is less need to "train" for Spain. Just use Spain as a location where you will ride and train at the same time.
