Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacement frame

I've purchased a replacement frame from Jamis due to a cracked carbon fiber frame. Do I get to keep the cracked frame?

If you purchased it, wouldn't that mean the original is yours.

But wouldn't the cracked frame be covered under warranty? Unless it was due to you running into a tree..

Um, perhaps you should ask Jamis?

If you just purchased a new frame then I would assume you get the old one. If you did some sort of crash replacement or something then no, I believe they will likely want to keep the cracked frame.

Unfortunately, it was not under warranty and I paid $1200 for a bike that retails at $1850... I think that means it wasn't part of the crash replacement and I should get to keep the old frame.

In case you did not know, Calfee repairs all brands of carbon frames.

Yeah, if I can keep it, then I may want to send it out to Calfee for repairs in the future. The Jamis warranty rep said that the LBS would dispose of the frame once they transfer all of the components to the new frame.

I think I'll ask the LBS to keep the old frame. Hopefully they'll say yes. If no, what argument can I offer up to change their mind? I think shelling out $1200 for a replacement frame for a bike that costs $1850 should entitle me to keep the old frame.

Is this frame being warrented or is it a "crash replacement"?
Sounds like a crash replacement, in which case IMO the frame is yours.
