yes on the running helping endurance and cardio, i found it painful at first a few years ago, but have become stronger. a major plus is it takes very little time to get ready, little time to complete an intense workout, and far less money of course!
i'm really starting to like it more, plus i'm fortunate enough to have many running trails practically out of my front door.

If most commentators agree that its different muscle groups, then the big thing is cardio-pulmonary and joint impact.
Some runners tend to be prone to injuries, like the miler of old, Marty Liquori and Mary Decker. They might have benefited by putting less miles of running and balancing it with more cardio-pulmonary on biking.

Right now, I'm in marathon training so all I do is run.
I was in pretty good cycling shape when I started my program. Now I ride easy to spin the legs out and that feels great.

I run a feeble 6 to 10 miles per week, depending on if I go for two or three runs in the same week. I've got tons of free time to exercise this summer and I spend it lifting and cycling for the most part. Running is an "off day" activity for me.
