06 Pilot 5.9 - is this the one?

If anyone cares to check I have searching for a new ride - everything and anything to find comfort. Some would call it bike shop ADD.

Anyway, I came across a new old stock Pilot 5.9 in my size, full dura ace, carbon stem bars, and race x lite for 2500, however its a 2006. Its gorgeous and fits like a glove. I swore I would never be "that guy" asking "is this a good price" but is that steep for an 06 bike? It was orignally 4200. I saw an 05, well used, go on ebay for 1500, but other than that I have no reference.

I would appreciate any assistance and any opinions from anyone riding a Pilot.

That's a pretty good price, if you're absolutely certain it fits you I would go for it. I mean, just for baseline cheapest possible scenario comparison, a full DA carbon bike from bikesdirect would run you $2000, and you're getting trek's warranty and resale value, shop support, a test ride, etc...

I'm only talking about value here, btw, I've never ridden one of these rigs.

sounds like a decent price, but i'm a little bias since I'm no fan of Shimano. My next bike will be Chorus, or if I can find Record for not much more, then record.

Very good points - thats why I come here. Plus the five year warranty on the wheels. Also, the groupset, cranks, stem, bars, and wheels are about 2500. I am thinking out loud here. Appreciate the feedback.

Can't go wrong for a new bike with warranty. Go for $2500, maybe see if they will throw in some pedals or helmet.

Just be absolutely sure it fits, bikes have a weird way of growing or shrinking once the discount gets to about 30% off retail, but then once they leave the shop they go back to their real size.

Agreed. I have studied the geometry of every test ride bike to just to give me a little more confidence that the numbers coincide with how it feels. I brought my castellis, shoes and helmet today - going to try to leave work early for a longer ride. They said they would let me take a long (20 mile) ride this afternoon.

2cyl, I own that same bike and really like it. I purchased it a year ago for $3000. Original retail was more like $4800 when it was a new model in 06. That frame and components are a great deal at $2500. All you have to do is shop and compare to see that. I have 3700 miles on mine, no problems. Let me know if you have any questions.

If you want the lightweight CF and high end components, you 'gotta pay, whether it's a Pilot or a Madone; otherwise, the Pilot is a performance bike that accommodates bigger tires than 23c and less aggressive seating, and just a tad longer wheelbase--sort of like a sleeper-Madone. Pilots no longer come in the complete range of CF and components so what you're looking at is the last of its kind. I love my Pilot 5.2. For that price, however, I'd rather save the $1.5-2K and get the new Madone with white CF and 105 or Ultegra components.

Earlier this year I bought a 2008 model Pilot 5.0 for $1900 if that gives you a reference point. Mine is a white carbon frame, with Bontrager Race wheels, and 105 front/ ultegra rear. I love that bike.

Sounds like a GREAT deal! Those wheels (I have them on my Roubaix) are great and sell for about $850 alone. Have a few friends that have Pilots..the only negative I've heard about them is that they don't climb THAT well..probably due to the longer wheel base..but if the bike fits you..and you're SURE it fits you...and you have the cash..I'd go for it. PS you may want to negotiate a swap out of the stock seat if you can...heard nothing but bad stuff about it.

Send us pictures when you get it home!

Full carbon 5.2 Full Ultegra 10 speed in 07 for an 06 model, paid $1799, original price $2799. $2500 seems steep for a 2 y/o bike even if it's full DA.
