Snake struck my shoe while on my ride today.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Snake struck my shoe while on my ride today.

To make a long story short, I was climbing back out of the Gorge from the river. I came to a set of railroad tracks that run almost paralell to the road while crossing it. I generally make a sweeping turn to cross at the proper angle. I saw a pile of leaves washed out from the ditch from the last rain, and then I felt it. It felt like a good sized rock hitting the inside of my right shoe, I slowed and when I looked back I saw a snake stretched out across the edge of the road.

I freaked out and stopped to make sure it didn't get me. After I realized I wasn't bitten, I went back and saw it was a rat snake that I had run over. I got a stick, picked it up and moved it off the road so it wouldn't get run over, but I don't think it will live.

This is the first time I have ever had contact with a snake where I did not initiate it. Not to mention, it was the highlight of my 23 mile ride.

I see a lot of snakes on one of the MUP's here. Often they're rattlesnakes. I don't mess with 'em and just let them go about their business.

years ago i had something like this happen on the Mt Vernon Bike path...from a distance it looked like someone left a tire tube in the middle of the path--figured that someone had a flat, repaired it and left the old tube on the path...as I slowed to stop and pick it up, I noticed it was not a tube, but a snake just sunning itself......needless to say, I didn't stop......

I saw a pretty nasty lookin snake on my ride the other day. I almost ran over it then felt stupid for even getting that close. Stranger things have happened than a snake managing to get a bite in on someone cycling by.

snakes are attracted to pavement because it heats up in the sun and stores heat well like those hot rocks they sell in pet shops for pet reptiles. The snakes want to warm up on the pavement so they just lie on it and unfortunately get run over.

We see the occasional snake here on the MUP -- usually just little grass snakes or rat snakes. Haven't been struck yet, but I did kick a squirrel in the head the other day (on accident). He lived -- ran between my wheels as I went by.

When I was young (and lived in India) I was either riding my bike or rollerblading down a hill, and there was this snake the darted across the street. Scared the crap outta me!
