Bike apps for iphone?
The 3g iPhone launch is right around the corner(Jul 10) and I'm in need of a more sophisticated bike computer. I've been looking into the Garmin 305/605/705 but the new iPhone intrigues me. I've searched online and here for any bike specific apps but havn't had much luck.
Does anyone have any information on bike specific applications being written or already written? The cost of the new iPhone is $199 which is cheaper than a Garmin 305 and far cheaper than a 605/705. For anyone reading that might be really tech saavy, is it even possible to write an app for the iPhone to perform functions such as heart rate monitor, cadence monitor or altimeter?
I would pay good money just to have everything integrated into one unit if anyone is considering writing such a program if it is even possible. I'm sure the market for this would be significant!

The Garmin has hardware in it that the iPhone does not which allows it to do those things, so if you wrote an app for the iphone to display the data, you'd still need another device to transmit, say, via Bluetooth to the iPhone. It would be easier for Garmin to adopt the iPhone features that it's missing rather than the other way around. I have a Tomtom that plays MP3s and makes phone calls when my cell is in BT range. If the Garmin had those features it would be able to do what you're looking for, I think...

Software is not the problem, hardware is. The wireless components are converging on some common formats (ANT+), but it is not bluetooth so the iphone won't be able to talk to any of them.
