Hi all,

The sun is intense here in Florida and I've been searching for a way to protect my scalp under my helmet. This should be a concern even for those of you with a lot of hair - which sadly I don't have

I'm currently trying a "Headsweats" Skull Cap by Pedro's, but I got a headache using it with my Giro Atmos helmet. I removed all of my pads, but it still felt uncomfortable.

What do you like? Do you prefer white or black skull caps? How do you modify your helmet when wearing a skull cap?

They're all basically the same, though in FL you're going to want on made from the thinnest material possible. Just go to a shop, they'll probably have a pile of them in the back that have showed up as swag from various companies.

I've been using a Headsweats shorty this spring and summer. My helmet must have been a bit too large, since it fits perfectly with the Headsweats. If you can't fit one with your helmet, a bike cap won't work either.

It does seem to soak up the sweat. I get much less dripping in my eyes now. And it's good when the weather is cold, too.

Cycling cap also has the benefit that it can shade the eyes from the sun.

I always found a bandana worked just fine. They're thin, they absorb, and it keeps my hair from poking out the helmet holes making me look like a weirdo

Cycling caps are pretty nice too. You'll take the brim for granted in no time.

I hadn't had to worry about it in the past (had hair back then)... but I now shave my head, so I'm glad that you brought this topic up.

I'm surprised that I don't have tan lines on top of my skull yet. I usually put on sunblock before riding, but not on top of my head.

I think I'll use a bandana or skull cap for my upcoming tour.

I like the Headsweats Coolmax cycling caps the best. I used to wear a cotton bandana but the coolmax works better at wicking the sweat away from my head.

Definitely get a cycling cap. They have those other halo things, or bandannas, blah, blah, but those are sorta Fred. You just don't see fast folks at races with those... and those are they guys who are out riding the major miles and know whats up.

Plus, I wear glasses, so the brim on cycling caps are very nice for keeping sun out of my eyes.

Also, for style points, one should attempt to color coordinate the cycling cap with the kit/helmet. Get a couple, since they should only be $4 or so, and wash them every once and awhile to ward off the funk.

Whatever happened to the Headsweats with brims on them? I have a couple of them, and love 'em. Can't find any more of them, though.

Cotton cycling caps have brims, but they don't wick sweat away as well as Headsweats do.

+1 on the Headsweats. I have a white one that works great. I think it does a better job of keeping me cool than having nothing on my head. It also keeps almost all of the sweat out of my eyes.

I am in Florida, too, and have been using the Halo, which used to work great, but seems to be failing me now.
I have a Headsweats scull-cap on order and I will actually be using it OVER the Halo. I am a big sweater, and don't like to stop once I get going, so hopefully between the two, I will have my voluminous sweat under control.
If in doubt, double-up!
I'll let you know how it goes.

Headsweats. There are (at least) three styles of the bandana/skullcap. I prefer the ones with a built-in headband. I use them all the time here in Texas.

Just started wearing a bandana this week, big improvement on the sweat dealie. I never put sunblock on my head 'cuz the sweat would just migrate it to my eyes...ouch! But I glop the begeezus outta my face, nose and ears.

I wear a Halo skull cap in white. I didn't think it worked very well until I went off without it. Good grief, I was a sweat hog! Good thing I don't wear sunscreen on my forehead.

I found a Gizmo at the Solvang Century in March. It's a minimalist skullcap with a sweatband sewn in, and an elastic pull and plastic controller (for lack of a better term). That works very well under a helmet with pads; I didn't have to adjust the straps much to make it fit comfortably.

I've tried a couple of skullcaps. tried ones that were very thin and had the wicking action, but it still seemed too hot. And I hate having to keep re-adjusting the chin strap. So I ended up on sunny days going with a sunscreen with an spf of 15. It blocks just enough to keep me from burning on a 30 mile ride. (I also have a Giro Atmos)
