Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There's no glory in dying because you couldn't hear a car coming, if you must listen to music then play it low so you can hear what's going on around you. I listen to music all the time except when I ride, there's just something nice about the sound birds and rustling of leaves but that's just me.

It's only people that don't listen to music when they ride that think they can't hear what's going on around you. It can be difficult to follow conversations so I don't listen to music in groups, but with the earphone in one ear at a moderate volume, there is no issue. And at least in CA, where the OP and I are, it is not illegal either.

I think its only illegal if you have both earphones in...

Either way, music is what helps me relax while on a ride... unless someone pulls up and starts a convo..
