Hill repeats/Intervals

Hi, I'm pretty new to cycling and hope to join the college team next year. I've been having trouble staying with the pack. Will intervals and hill repeats help with this problem or is it more an issue of drafting? Also, how hard is it to sprint 40+ miles per hour cuz that would sound fun.

Thanks

If you're new, I'd just concentrate on getting as many miles in as you can. If you get bored, intervals and hill repeats are a very efficient way to gain fitness, but you've got so much build ahead of you that really anything will help. Keep going out with fast group rides. Get better.

just ride. your first year should be about creating a base or foundation of aerobic fitness. don't worry about miles, focus more on time. i can tell just from your post that you'll likely ride too hard too often right now.
see if the college coach will give you some advice. seel him out, tell him you want to be on the squad and that you're new and need to know what to do this year to prepare yourself. such advice will be priceless.
also pick up a copy of The Cyclists Training Bible by Joel Friel. It has lots of good information about how to train.
