What is your opinions on using a trunk rack for a bike that is full carbon, or a carbon/ aluminum mix (Giant)that has a Carbon top tube? Should this be a concern at all? Most of the trips would be about 3.5 hours each way, but MAYBE once a month or so once summer hits in Northern Mi.

Used a Bones and a Performance hitch rack for about 7 years now with the same CF frame. No problems.

The bigger concern is trunk-mount vs. hitch. I would advise trunk-mount racks for people doing no more than 2-3 uses per year. Other than that, you can get a hitch put on for around $150 bones (if you don't already have one) and a really nice new Yakima DoubleDown for around $200 or less. And that keeps the rack and the added weight of your bike off of the trunk, where even the slightest dirt film becomes abrasive between the paint and the rubber bumper.
The bike will be fine whichever option you use, but will be alot more secure with a hitch rack.
