Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Commuter turned weekend warrior

Well I still commute to work, but I've started to ride longer and longer on the weekends for the past 6 months. I was wondering if it was too late to start road racing at 22. I know it might sound ridiculous, but I've been researching clubs and they always mention starting at the age of 15 or so. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Eh 22? I'm almost 30 and I'm just starting. I don't have any delusions of going to the highest levels but that doesn't mean I can't have fun entering races once I'm in good enough shape to. I'm at the "keep up with the club rides" stage currently...

I did my first race at 38. I was at a party on the 4th chatting with a 70 year-old who was a multiple state jersey winner. His first race was at 41.

Ask at your LBS, they may sponsor a team. Ask at the local group rides.
