Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

how many doubles this year?

i've done three double-centuries so far this year, one triple, and another double coming up this weekend.

surely some of you can clobber my total - what's your tally of doubles so far this year?

Wow, how long does it take to do 300 miles in one day?

well, i should admit that my "triple" was over the period of 1.5 days - but with only 30 minutes of sleep in between each day, so i'm counting it as one big ride.

you can read about that adventure here. (it was actually a 600km brevet that i DNFd 520km into the ride)

Doubles are fun, but there are some problems with them. One is getting enough free time to ride one -- they really do take all day, and you can't get anything else that's useful done. Also, there aren't that many organized ones that are convenient.

It would take me 15+ hours to do a double and somewere in there i would come to a stop and fall over sideways.

Four doubles (400Km = 250 mi), a triple (600Km = 375 mi), and one sextuple (1000Km = 625 mi). Plenty of 300Km (usually between 186 and 200 mi) which are close, but no cigar.

Last year I had a pentuple at the Texas Time Trials, but I've yet to do a quadruple century. Randonneuring doesn't have any standard rides between 400 and 600 miles so I'd probably have to DNF a 1000K after the second loop with 450 mi. to get a quad.

Doubles are easy except for dealing with the heat in Texas this time of year.

Obviously some sleep on the 600 and 1000, but all done as a single ride.

I've done a couple of double metric century rides (solo), but no double imperial (200 mile) rides this year.

Zilch. I don't have the time or the will power at the moment. I would like to give a double a try eventually. Perhaps next year.

Do double big macs count?

If so, then none. I'm a vegetarian.

First, here's the Double Century thread in the Long Distance forum:
https://www.bikeforums.net/long-distance-competition-ultracycling-randonneuring-endurance-cycling/375150-2008-double-century-thread-longer-rides.html

Second, this year, I have come close to doing a double century .... about 307 kms, and a double century is 323 kms ... but that is as close as I've come. Most years I've done several of them by now because I've usually finished a set of Randonneuring brevets, but this year I'm fighting with an injury which is really slowing my cycling down.

Third, if you're talking "ever" ... I've done:

8 - double centuries (323 km+ rides)
12 - 400K+ rides
7 - 600K+ rides
1 - 1000K ride
4 - 1200K rides

For a total of 32 double centuries.

You're not supposed to do anything else that's useful on a double century day ... it's a day off ... a day to get out on your bicycle and just ride and ride and ride and ride ... and relax and enjoy.

Wife and I did our first double metric a couple weeks ago...

I'm not ready for a double century, still have to get the nourishment thing down pat so I can finish without the gastric issues that plagued me on this last ride and the century before...

We are planning our next double metric for the next long weekend...

Every once in a while I think I'll do one just to say that I've done one. Then I think better of it.
