New Rider, Advice on New Bike?

I was gonna get a new bike from target for $60 but I heard to not get that. Im a guy of high maintaince you may say but I also love shop budget (i love designer name outlet stores). So I dont want to be seen with a "cheap" bike. lol
Anyhow, I need a new beginners inexpensive bike. I guess they start at $300 so my budget will be in that range. Any recommendations? brands? models?

My purpose. mostly street/road/sidewalk riding. I would use to ride to school, go to store, go to the gym and MAYBE work later on. I would ride on sidewalks as Im scared of the actual roads. lol. No heavy dirt riding but maybe a ocasion dirt riding here and there. My old bike kept gettin flat tires and of the dirt/sidewalk i used to ride on. I want a fast bike but again im a college student so im a VERY tight budget.

any suggestions? im a guy btw. =)

Check out the Singlespeed/Fixed Gear Forum. If you want to ride with the hip hop kids, you need to ride ss/fg.

Look for something used on craigslist. You can definitely find some good used stuff. Plus, riding around on a vintage machine is so much more classy than riding on some lame hybrid/commutermobile that 40-year-old Larry rides from his house to the office everyday. You need something swank, and you're not going to find that for $300 in the new bike world.

Look at these two smart bikes in the MPLS area:

Schwinn continental - bronze and neon green

Fuji single speed - Gray and neon yellow

There is simply no way that you will be able to find a new bike with either a pink chain, or neon green or yellow bar tape, and you know that, with a combination of style, functionality and pinache like that, there is no way you can go wrong.
