I decided to purchase a pair of these tires from PBK about a month ago. I previously used Continental 4000s, but found them difficult to mount on my Easton wheels.

Although I don't race, I'd say the P3R's are probably better suited for racing since they handle great and offer a better ride than the 4000s. The problem with the P3R is the wear. After 870 miles, the cords are already showing on the rear tire. Although I'm 225lbs, IMO tires should last longer than this.

At this point, I'm going to try the Michelon Krylion's.

You won't go wrong with the krylions....however rumor has it there might be availability problems. Mine are bulletproof and the only punctures I have had were my fault (underinflated tires -->pinch flat).

Krylions are great tires. I was under the impression that the PR3s were supposed to wear as well as the PR2s, but a recent thread has pointed to anecdotal evidence that increased wear being experienced by more than a few now on the PR3s.

Still...if you don't like having to shell out for tires more often and don't miss the performance the racing tire will give you then by all means the Krylions are a great alternative.

If you would still like to get the performance of the PR3s and are willing to spend a little more (rememebr you are saving a ton anyway by buying from PBK) then might I suggest what many of us do:

When you buy new tires buy at least 3 or more at a time. When the rear is ready to be replaced then simply swap it with the front and put a new tire on the front. Over time you will get better life compared to just swapping both out at the same time.

BTW - don't confuse this with tire rotation because you are never putting a worn rear on anything (other than the trainer). I have debated tire rotation on here before and actually find myself more in the "don't" camp on rotation currently.

I am having alot of trouble finding the Krylions at any kind of decent price. My last set went almost 4000 miles, and that included a fair amount of trainer time. I got a pair of PR3's from PBK when they had a great price on them but I really like the Krylions.

Tires are subjective due to the variables (weight, road surface, luck) but I love the Kenda Kaliente Kevlar tires. $20 a piece, 210 grams, last 2000 miles.

I just did a quick Google search and found a few places selling the 700x23's, for prices around $35/ea. I wish PBK had them in stock, I really like their service.

Ever LBS I have been in lately has oodles of Krylions, but I guess we all know their prices are the sucketh.

I was in one toady during lunch that had a bunch. Their price on the PR2s (I was checking to see if I could get some NOS PR2s obviously) was actually only $40-ish. Not great at all, but not the usual highway robbery so....depending on how big of a hurry you are in....

I have had mine on for almost a month and have about 700 miles on them. Other than a small cut in the rear tire, the rear basically looks brand new. I weigh 155 lbs though, and that may be the difference. I am incredibly happy with this tire and have put it on my wife's bike now as well. We have an extra 3 in the house too, to support wear and damage, but so far, they are perfect.
