Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

tendon pain behind knee?

Been riding and racing a long time, but just started having this and I am hoping someone has some suggestions...any ideas what could be causing pain in the tendon behind my knee? Same bike, same saddle, same cleat position, same saddle height, no changes that I am aware of...but the thing hurts like crazy everytime I attend a spin class with my wife, and lately has been causing similar probs on the road as well...
Thanks for any suggestions!

I think your saddle is too high.

I've pretty much gone through an identical set of circumstances.

I do 80+ races a year, and my average annual kilometer count is in excess of 15,000. I haven't changed my setup, including cleat, saddle position or saddle height for more than 6 months. I'd think if the setup was wrong the knee pain would have onset long before today.

In my case I was doing a few hill repeats on my commute home. I was riding a MTB and was lapping on a 300m hill @ 10%, something I've done about a thousand times before, I was doing it seated and was maintaining a cadence of around 80, riding 32x23. Felt completely fine doing it, but when I arrived home (about 30km later), I was starting to feel a fairly sharp pain behind the knee. I took a day off then returned to my normal program, which flared it up. So I've just finished my 3rd consecutive day of forced rest, tonight I'll return lightly to the rollers.

I'd guess if you do have inflammation, that rest is going to be the best for it. I've also been using NSAID's (cream) which have helped. I might guess in your case that if it's flaring up at spin class it might be the saddle height/position coupled with either hi power or high cadence work that is doing you in.
