Is it blasphemous that I don't think Assos are worth the money?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it blasphemous that I don't think Assos are worth the money?

I bought 2 pair of Assos bibs in the Competitive cyclist sale 2 weeks ago. So far I'm not that impressed. Don't get me wrong they are good bibs with a good chamois but they don't really stand out as all that impressive to me. Maybe over time they will stand out further but right now I am glad I didn't pay full price for them.

what style? the 360s or F13s?

my recent switch over to bibs has been interesting. trying to find my size with each brand. being tall and skinny makes it difficult. does one shop height or weight? are they Euro or American sizing? all things to consider.

anyway, so far i have Assos Equippes (F1 Mille) & F13 S-2s. at first i was not a fan of the F1 Mille Chamios. it is HUGE. however, after a couple longer rides i get it and it works. the minute i put on the F13 i could tell they were some high end bibs. the fabric, the feel, the fit, & the chamios was just obviously better. so far they are my favorite.

in my search for a third and final (cheaper) pair i have tried Performance Ultras, but returned them. the chamios did not agree with me and overall they just seemed of poor quality. next up i tried a pair of Pearl Izumi Slice bibs that i like, but after two rides in them they are too big. i will return them for a smaller size.

so, on goes my bib odyssey .

later.

Give the Giordana Forma Bib Shorts a try.
I have both them and the Assos and they
are just as good IMHO.

I have 2 pairs of Milles and they are the best bibs I have worn bar none. I got deals on both pairs but would be willing to pay more now that I know.

LOVE MY ASSOS.

I have three bibs:

Assos F1 Uno
Performance Elite
Performance Ultra

They each have a different fit, but I can say that they have all done fine on long rides (centuries and such). The only one that isn't "just right" is the Elite and that's because the shoulder straps are a bit too long. The Assos straps a pretty tight, but not uncomfortable. The chamois in all of them all do the job for me. So my little assortment ranges from something like $39 (Elite) to $160 (Assos). If I decide to add to the collection, I'll probably add something in the middle of the range just for the heck of it.

Hmmmmm.....Sure you got the correct size? I have a COLLECTION of many different brands of bibs and shorts from Pi, Voleur, Specialized, Bellweather, Nike......etc......Nothing else I own comes close to the fit and feel of my FI 13's. At first I thought they were to small but once I understood that what feels tight when standing makes perfect sense on the bike I was instantly in love. They are my go to bib's for any long ride.

I think there is a breakpoint where the money you pay is not worth the so-called benefit you derive from a product. I bought some DeMarchis from Performance a few years ago, having never tried them on, and liked them so much I bought 5 more. I tried Performance Century Gels and they fit like ****e, but I use them as backups instead of returning them. I got some stuff from a USA Cycling sale (nice to live in an Olympic town) that was top line branded apparel, the stuff the big boys wear, and it also fits like crap.

I know botto likes the Assos, but Assos are not for all asses.

  • Some people associate high prices with high quality.
  • Some people don't bother to research user reviews on such products until they've purchased such products.
  • Some people who purchase such products are to ashamed to admit their mistake because of their impulsivity.

Assos, is a way overpriced brand.

I agree with the above, that Hincapie brand is probably one of the best bang for buck, when it comes to top end clothing.

Heck, for everyday riding, I just use my Performance Elite shorts. They work fine with no chamois butter for just about all my riding, even all day events.

They make a great pair of bibs...i guess my expectations were just too high. I was expecting and "ass awakening" experience that would cause me to never wear another pair of bibs again...not so much. But i will definitely continue to ride in them.

I do love my Craft Pro Race bibs but the chamois is only good for about a season of riding before it starts getting thin.
