What is your cycling philosophy?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is your cycling philosophy?

"My infatuation with cycling, I now realize, goes much deeper than racing or even winning. The sport has substance. The legends, international flair, jargon, seasonal unions and lasting friendships, the unseen strategies, and the never-ending thrill of adventure. These are the diamonds of my youth."
- John Howard
As Quoted in Roadie.

Also, I can eat like a horse and not look like one.

Hills make you strong, wind makes you mean.

I ride to eat. And eat. And eat.

Gas, for me, is only a Taco Bell away.

Maybe it is Mankind's tendency to "explore" what that abyss it. We are still trying to unlock the laws, the secrets, the "everything" about that abyss. In a way, I am referring to Mankind's exploration about the cosmos.

Lately, I have been reading a bit of Quantum Mechanics.

Yay...lol

i think this is kind of a dumb quote. I understand it totally but theoretically if you maintained the same speed as you got more fit than riding does indeed get easier in terms of how much work you do.

"I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected
enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired, to fathom the power,
to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain,
to swing on the spiral
of our divinity and still be a human."

Yup, that about sums it up.

"Ride, but not enough to lose muscle mass".

Yes it is true, weight lifting is my passion, cycling a hobby that i love as well. I just cant see myself as a living example of atrophy(upper body)...not there is anything wrong it...just dont care for the look on me.

OP, I think you're trying to make this a bit too deep. Bikes are FUN.

Bicycles are also a simple and elegant solution to several of the Big Problems facing us in the modern world, but the first principle should never be forgotten. It is essential, and as deep and spiritual as you ever need to go: bikes are FUN.

I do it because well, thats what I do! Cycling is my 'thing' to do to 'get away' I love the pain, the speed, the bike, the sounds.

Heck, I do it because that is my passion and what I love to do!

and yeah I am sappy and apply this to life

"It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life "

and to me that also applies to cycling...don't know how, just does!

The "connection" I feel to my surroundings when I ride.

The pre-ride prep, the early in the ride pain. the mid-ride endorphines, the late ride "Zen" and the post ride buzz.

(Also, to echo Pcad, the more I urban riding I do the more grateful I am that I didn't feel "connected" with the front of an SUV / bus.)

My weight has more metal bending Karma then other peoples' weight so after trashing 3 frames I got one that has stood the strain so far. Philosophy? To hold my line when I ride in heavy traffic at night and to ride on freeway shoulders whenever legal. To support the UMCA and IHPVA. To wave at strangers.
