Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There's no good excuse, wear your helmet. If they make fun of you, they are not your friends anyway. This is from my low-speed motorcycle crash (20mph or so):

if that was my head, I won't be typing this annoying msg. Same goes for bicycle. There's no good reason not to wear one!

Ask the cyclist who died the other day in Louisville

This happened a few days ago. The guy works for the same company that I do; he was just riding to work, with no helmet, and now he is dead. And of course, the cops aren't pressing charges, because the cyclist shouldn't have been riding on the road - he belongs on the sidewalks, right?

Cyclist's death brings renewed call for drivers to pay attention

This dude is dead, because some punk@ss in a Honda was impatient, and once again, nothing will be done. Hey, if it was up to me, I would make bike helmets the law. Because I care. I know, people have the right to go lid-less and if they die for it, that is their right too. Is it that important to look cool, or have neat hair, that some cyclists must risk their lives by not wearing a helmet?

Please, wear a friggin' helmet. Save yourself. Dang!

That was me one time. I forgot my helmet, went on a ride anyway, then woke up on the ground barely able to move. Two skull fractures, spinal fracture, nearly paralyzed, eight weeks out of work, months of rehab after that, etc. Now I wear one every ride, even just down the street.

There's really no reason not to these days. Modern helmets, even the 40 dollar ones, have gotten really good to the point where they're un-noticeable when riding.

Points for still being alive. Double triple bonus points for (apparently) still riding.

Just bought my helmet online today. Should be here by the end of the month. Been riding for the past two weeks without one, and I'm tired of playing chicken with the remainder of my natural lifespan.

I wore one when I rode in high school (I think), but I pretty much stopped riding when I went to college. Now college is through, and I've started riding the rusty bikes in the backyard. Helmet's long gone. Kept telling myself I'd buy one in a month when I officially begin commuting to grad school, that I'd stop in at Walmart or order online and get all my gear in one fell swoop. But today, I went and ordered pretty much all my gear, and realized there was no good reason to keep gambling with two decades of experiences in a functioning brain and my whole life ahead of me. Bought the helmet. Will try to stay alive until it arrives.

Wear a helmet. It only takes a second--to wear one, or to die without one. Or worse, to be paralyzed for life, Schiavo/Reeves style (RIP).

Helmet rules:

1) Always wear a helmet while biking
2) $10 helmets are only good for $10 heads, frugal bikers should pry open the wallets for this purchase.

Fractured my skull after a fall. Lesson learned. Helmet on. Besides, I find those not wearing helmets to look a bit strange. To each his own. Live and learn!!

See picture of my helmet below. I fell 3 weeks ago, cracked 3 ribs and hit my head hard. I was only going 10 miles an hour or so (a huge wind gust blew me sideways enough to dump while I was drinking from my water bottle. I'm back on the bike now but may have died otherwise.

I still don't wear one when I'm skiing, however. I don't see that changing for a while.
I started wearing one a few years ago and actually find it very comfortable. I forgot it was on my head after the 1st ride up the chairlift, and now cant imagine why anyone would ski without one, especially if you're ducking into the glades.

Oh yeah, I'm stronger than I've ever been. Just finished a week-long MTB trip to Crested Butte, which included rides at 11,000' elevation and the like. Altitude kicked my weenie ass, but man the rides were amazing.
