Do modern tubes dry rot?
I've got more tubes than I really need. I used to flat a LOT, riding in the DC area. Since I moved to West BF NC 9 months ago I have yet to flat. I swear, it's almost boring. Anyway, I've got maybe 10 brand new Michelin tubes in boxes sitting in the basement. I'm wondering if they are going to dry rot (oxidize?) and, if so, would it help to seal them in heavy-duty plastic bags?

10 tubes... when you get to the last one it will more than likely be ok.

I'd put them in a ziploc just to be safe. I once had a ("modern"?) tube go bad with age. But just yesterday, I put on tube on that had been sitting in a box for 8-10 years.
My guess is that my tube that went bad had extra stress at the corners where the tube had been folded (by me), but that a factory-packaged tube has no corner folds and will last indefinitely. |
Ziplock with talc.

I shrink wrap mine, though not because of dry rot because I keek a spare tube in jersey pocket and it keeps the box from melting away from sweat.
