repainting a frame that is chromed underneath

so i guess they use to chrome old steel frames before they painted them to keep them from rusting. if you wanted to repaint a frame like this are there any problems you would run into either getting the paint off without taking the chrome off or getting the new paint to adhere?

I believe the chrome should come off.

ok thanks. i dont see that as being a problem. i wont be riding this bike in conditions for it to rust anyways. and at least i know there is a nice frame underneath that chrome =)

Well, don't take my opinion with a lot of weight - I'm no expert. Wait for some more knowledgeable BFers to chime in.

Here's a link to a thread on this that says it can be done:

Actually they chrome the whole frame so you can have chrome drop outs and stays etc. Nothing to do with rust prevention.
My 1987 Pinarello had the whole frame chromed but everywhere there was paint it had been sandblasted to rough it up for paint adhesion. I used paint stripper from Home Depot to remove the paint and didn't hurt the chrome.
You DON'T need to remove the chrome.

Sounds like yer saying, paint remover doesn't disturb chrome but cannot PAINT OVER the chrome. Correct?

Several years ago I was told to have my Tommaso (chromed, painted Columbus SLX) sandblasted to bare metal and powder coated. It was more expensive to have the components stripped and reinstalled than the actual sandblasting and powder coating. I never did it and elected to live with the chips and dings in the finish until I replaced it.

The paint remover I used did not hurt the chrome and you CAN paint over chrome but it is usually bead blasted or etched to make sure it sticks.
Removing chrome is a reverse plating process and not worth the expense unless you need to save a few grams of weight.
