Riding with a larger phone (Smartphone)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Riding with a larger phone (Smartphone)

I'm eligible for an upgrade on my wireless plan and I am deciding between the Palm Centro and Moto Q9C (I'm on Verizon).

I know these are bigger phones and my clamshell one fits perfectly in my saddle bag along with my CO2 pump and patch kit. I have a larger size Trek saddle bag.

Does anybody else here have a smartphone and ride with it, and do you think it'll be able to work in my saddle bag? Should I decide on a protective cover as well if\when I get one of these?

Also, if you have any comments on the phones themselves I'd to hear them before spending $99 bucks on a new phone. I'm already aware of all the features and battery life, so personal experience would help if you have any.

Thanks

I have a Blackjack smartphone and it fits perfectly in a standard IPOD arm band, which is nice because it stays close enough to my bluetooth stereo head set that I use primarily when I'm jogging.

Many of the square brick smartphones will fit the IPod armbands.

Mine fits in the saddle saddle bag just fine w/ CO2 pump, 2 cartridges, tire lever, multi-tool, and spare tube. It's a tight fit, but it works.

I put my Treo in a ziplock bag and it goes in my left pocket. Been doing that for years. Don't have a saddle bag.

jersey pockets > saddle bags. 3 pockets, one for spare tube, co2, tirelevers, another for snacks and the third for cellphone. And unlike a saddle bag, you can't lose them going over a bump.

I'd be hesitant to carry an expensive phone on the bike. I just pop my SIM card into an older flip phone when I ride, just in case.

I have a blackberry 8800, it fits in my saddle bag when there isn't a tube inside or I'll put it in one of my jersey pockets.

I've carried a Blackberry 8700 and a Treo 650 with me (at different times). Just put it in a case or plastic bag, and you should be fine.

I recommend putting it in a case; I saved the phone from several accidents this way.

phone

Yeah, definitely a plastic bag for the phone. I had a treo in my jersey pocket about a year ago and was sweating like a hog, and shorted the phone out, completely ruined it.

This has never happened to me, and I've left my devices exposed sometimes. You must have drained your body!!

Blackberry 8310 and some Clif Bars go in my right jersey pocket, wallet and mini-tool in middle pocket, keys and more food in the left pocket.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd put my stuff in my pockets if I had a more poseur-fitting jersey, but they're all fred sized with sagging pockets because I can never find a small enough jersey.

I have an HTC Tilt and am considering finding an old AT&T phone from someone and just switching the SIM card when I go on a ride.

I keep my cell in a ziplock bag in one of my jersey pockets. Put an old phone in my saddle bag on a MTB ride once.

Once.

My brother notified me that Verizon is not a GSM network and therefore doesn't use SIM cards?

I'm looking at the two smallest, lightest smartphones available on Verizon. But I'm torn between them because of the operating systems. The Centro is a good phone, but I also like the idea of having Windows Mobile, which the Moto has. I can't decide right now but I know when I walk into the Verizon store within the next couple weeks, I'm going to walk out with either a Palm Centro or Moto Q9C.

I also need some of the extra features like scheduling and stuff. Windows shows your scheduling right on the home screen when you have appointments put in, but Palm OS just pops up a window and beeps at you.

Now, one thing that occurred to me - say I put the phone in the saddle bag and things are shifting around. What's the best way to protect the screen, especially for the Centro with its typical Palm touch screen?

I ride with my Blackberry and I specifically picked the Pearl because the other models are not only big but weigh about as much as a boat anchor. I can't imagine riding with something has heavy as a Treo. But then my phone sits in my jersey pocket as I use the smallest possible seat bag which holds only a tube and some cartridges. I think large seat bags are remarkably unsightly.

Weight Weenie time...

Length: 4.22", Width: 2.11" , Depth: 0.73", Weight: 4.2 oz

There's a tradeoff between H\W size and Depth between the two. Even though it's slimmer, the Moto is heavier.

Dang, and I hate Blackberries. It's not even available on Verizon though.

EDIT: Oh wait, yeah it is. I was in the wrong tab on their site. But still, I dislike Blackberries.
