Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do you know which Allez it is? I have the 07 comp and it is a lot of fun:

https://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkM...007&spid=21894

So far no issues with about 600 miles on it running 105 and with mavic wheels. Depending on what kind of riding your going to do, I wouldn't really go below having 105, so this should be a good deal (I paid more than $1000 ).

An SV is a great track tool IF it's set up correctly. The bike you're looking at is the same. A new rider can grow for years on it before they need to move on.

The R6 of bicycles would be a carbon TREK (I don't ride a TREK, so I don't know the names), with Ultegra.

I ride a custom steel cross bike. It's like a trick KTM supermotard, with LOTS of suspension upgrades, and bad@ss brakes.

Oh... that's what my SM looks like.

Have you considered a 105 / Tiagra mix. I realize your budget is set at $1000, but I just bought a new RB for about $600 featuring Tiagra shifters and a 105 RD that work perfectly. In fact, the Tiagra shifters shift identical to the 105 with the integrated brake lever. For the type of riding you are intending you may want to take a look at a 2009 Motobecane Grand Record.

I bought it NEW on Ebay, which ended up being cheaper than buying it direct from Bikes Direct.

I have heard that somehow they are related, I don't know how, or why, and I don't care.

You can see detailed pictures of my new bike coming out of the box, and closeups of the components. The problem is that the images are quite large and some are redundanct. I haven't had the time to clean them up.

https://compuweb.com/bugsy/grandrecord

By looking at the pictures you'll be able to see what it looks like when the shipment comes in.

It was easy to put the bike together, but you really have to know what your doing to fine tune it and fit it for your body size. There are charts to help you decide what bike size to get, but to tune the bike and tweak the fit you should take it to a LBS for assistance. My LBS tuned my gears, breaks, head set, handlebars, air pressure, seat adjustments, and test road the bike for $16. While I was there I bought a few nice accessories.

I live in Philly and highly recommend a company called Via Bicycles on 9th St. (my LBS that tuned my bike). I'm about 6' tall / average build and I decided to get a 58cm sized bike.

Whatever bike you decide to get, I strongly recommend Tiagra or better shifters. The Sora shifters require that you shift from a small top switch type of lever that is hard to reach, especially while you're in a drop. With the brake lever switches it's easy to change gears from the top or lower hand position. For me, it's not a big issue, but I thought that if I get more involved and decide to graduate to a higher end bike I would already be comfortable with the integrated brake shifter found in the Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, and Dura Ace.

You failed to list many other posts not realated to my new bike.

The (73) post was in response to a Moto bottom bracket report. Apparently my moto uses a different kind of bottom bracket.

The (31) post was posted in a thread "The Best Road Bikes for "true" first time road bike owners.
I'm a true first time road bike owner.

The (7) post was posted in a thread "looking for first road bike". I can truly recommend my first road bike that I purchased last week.

The (309) post was posted in the Sticky "Under $750" thread.

The (8625) post was posted in the "What Road Bike Do You Have" thread.

The (7) post was to help out in the "Newb" thread and make a recommendation like others also did in the thread.

I will believe you if you show the box that your bike came in with a Philadelphia address and a Frank's Black Cherry Soda.

Ebay and BD aren't related. Ebay sells nothing on their own, they provide services for sellers. Anyone, including you, can be a seller on ebay. The sellers that sell new BD bikes on ebay are BD employees rather than independent dealers.

Very cool. It looks like the old Triumph tt600 (minus the air dam). I had an old NT650 Hawk with waaaaay too much money in it. I've been through several Ninjas, a couple of Ducatis (still have a 748S), and now I'm stuck on Supermotards.

The MSRPs are bogus. Despite the marketing, BD is not a dealer for several European companies. They've purchased the rights to use names of now-defunct companies you may have heard of and import various frames from Asia and put their decals on them. Sometimes the frames are also sold by other companies under their own names or are simply year or two old models.

QA may be questionable, customer service is spotty, and if you don't understand fitting or bicycle adjustment, you'll need to spend some money at your LBS. All that said, these drawbacks are why they are so cheap. If you can deal with them, then BD can be a good value.

Do a search, you'll find out way more than you want.

What sold me on the Grand Record was that it was the absolute lowest priced bike offering the Tiagra shifters, a light frame, a decent brake set, and a 105 or greater RD. Of course I took into account the sum of all of the parts like the crank, rims, tires, front fork, saddle and pedals and compared to many bikes.

My main complaint so far in the short time that I've been riding my new Moto is the weak paint job. It "looks" very nice (I actually prefer another color and look, but it's all they offer), but the paint chips very easily, in fact, too easily. You cannot lean this bike up agains anything with the frame touching or you'll mark it up in a way that you can't rub it off. The paint job is very weak! I'm thinking I'll have it sanded down and painted custom someday, we'll see.

Like I said in another post, you can search for a "2006 Diamondback Podium 2" for a really sweet deal on a bike that matches the component list, but is a closeout, and only available in 42cm and 44cm.
