DMT Ultimax Spirit shoes: what do you think?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

DMT Ultimax Spirit shoes: what do you think?

I've been using some specialized carbon road shoes and my toes have been getting numb. They were a size 45. I'm going to sell those and I just bought some DMT Ultimax Spirit shoes for 59.99 shipped on ebay. Went with a size 46 and am hoping I won't get numbness now.

Has anyone tried these shoes and what were your impressions. I don't race and not sure if I ever will. The most I've gone is about a 20 mile ride. Just trying to get better really.

No, they are just a small Euro make. A bit obscure. I doubt many people here have used Gaerne or Marresi shoes either. If you asked the same thing about Sidi, you would have had a lot more responses. Generally DMT has a good reputation. Anyway, since you've bought them, it's too late to fret. Try them, and report back

DMT is not obscure at all. I think the problem with the Ultimax Spirit is that while they are fine shoes they are WAY overpriced. You can have shoes with better features for $50 less.

^^^ I disagree. I have them, and they are stellar shoes. Like any shoe, they have good points, and some that may not fit your specific taste.

I have the Ultimax RSX carbon sole version. Very good shoes. Not as much arch support as I would like. Also, the buckle strap tends to put a bit of stress on the top tendons, because the tongue is not quite as padded as I wish it was. The heel is not replacable, and they tend to run a smidgeon narrow in the toe.

How to solve these discrepencies. Easy. Eventually, I will replace my insole (which is easily removed), with a better one that has more arch support, and may be a little softer. Perhaps even with some heat sensitive foam lining to shape to my foot. The original insole is an VERY stiff/hard foam which serves only one purpose... power transmission. The lack of desired padding in the tongue will easily be offset by a softer insole, which will help prevent excessive force on the top strap by cushioning the underside of my foot better. How do I know this? I asked a shoe expert.

Those are the tiny points I have issues with. However, that's not to say it isn't a really good shoe. It really is. It is very well ventilated with vents everywhere and highly breathable fabric. Also, it's not a soft comfy shoe like a Sidi. This is a hard shelled pure performance oriented monster. Don't expect extreme comfort with DMT. Some people do, but only if your foot is a perfect match. Instead, expect pure performance with a seriously stiff shoe that seems to pound every ounce of your being into the pedals with little loss along the way.

You disagree that they are overpriced?

Yes, but only considering they are 2/3 the price of Sidis, and about the same as others in their class. The price seems about right for what they are, and what they are compared to.

To be honest, I think any cycling shoe over $150, is probably overpriced. It only takes a certain amount of time and labor to make a good shoe. Making them in the tens of thousands, they rapidly become a pure profit item. What you pay for more than anything is good engineering and label. The actual shoes themselves are not worth much more than any other.

It's like clothes. The amount of labor that goes into sewing the things up isn't any more or less than a less expensive item. It's only the type of fabrics (some really are nice), and the engineering and label (primarily label) that goes into the extreme high price of gear.

Man, that's nuts! I've never seen a shoe just split in half like that. How hard do you pedal?

You buy a pair of basketball shoes and they last you forever. You think it had to do with the cold? I'm in cali so it's not going to get that cold over here, and if it did you wouldn't see me riding...well...not that dedicated yet any way. Did you ever get those things wet? How did the dmt replacements turn out? I bought mine on ebay and on closeout so I'm pretty sure there isn't going to be a warranty on them. Any how, I hope my pair lasts.

The original shoes that I had in which these were to replace was from the same LBS that I bought my bike from. Only reason I bought these to replace the specialized shoes was my toe seems to get numb after 7 miles. So enlight of this, I'm thinking that maybe they will give me a break if I bring in my old specialized carbon shoes that I bought from them...and let me return them for a set that is one size up...even though it was a good 2 months ago since I bought them.

I did like them prior to the break. As noted above, they were really well vented (much better than the sidi) which was great in the summer. The soles were not carbon, and maybe it was due to the cold, but I heard this happened several times when I spoke with a LBS. I believe they got the problem cleared up over at DMT. None the less - I was pretty turned off by the whole event & having to buy a new pair of shoes during month+ replacement period.
I tried to sell the replacements on ebay, brand new, but it didnt work out. At $60 for you pair, now I see why mine didnt sell.

I bought them HERE

Well I'll see how it goes, your obviously at a different level and probably do more miles in two months than I would in a year, so these might just last me. If they last a year I'd be happy. I'm just trying to get in shape and work my way up. Hopefully the LBS will let me return my old shoes and then maybe I can just use the dmts as back up or for my short local rides.
