The Cobra strikes again!
Ricco passed the hardest test...the drug test that is. He tested positive for a 3rd generation EPO. So much for the excitement he brings eh?

You know, it's really sad these days...whenever I see someone perform that well, I immediately think, "Oh, he's doping"...and it always seems to come true. Note - he finished 2nd in the Giro

Well, he did want to be like Pantani. Unfortunately he seems to be well on his way.

I know it costs a boatload, but I still think every rider in the TDF should have to get tested to participate. Of course, according to Landis's excerpts there are ways for dopers to avoid getting caught, so I don't even know if that's a solution.
However, I hate feeling questionable even about guys like Evans, who I really doubt is a doper. I like Evans, I would love to see him or especially Vandevelde win, but can I really root for them when I deep inside wonder if they, too, are doping?

I wasn't a Ricco fan anyway, so I'm not all that upset to see him leave (sucks the whole team decided to go too though)... anyone who gives themselves their own nickname is a tool.

I think the examples of CSC/Saxo, Columbia, and Garmin are illuminating: the real solution will come from corporate sponsors insisting that they not be embarrassed by the team, and requiring in-house testing... so it won't be just a matter of passing the doping controls, but a matter of actually riding clean.
The reputational impact of something like Landis' expulsion, or Rasmussen's has to be a killer for a corporate sponsor.
CSC is dropping their sponsorship, but since the team has a solid internal testing program, they seem to have already gotten a new sponsor. Gerolsteiner is not having the same luck... maybe that would be different if they could virtually guarantee a sponsoring entity that they won't be made to look like idiots.
Ricco seemed like a bit of a prick anyway, and I had been suspicious of his performance in the tour. Would have been great if it was clean, but it's not shocking that his impressive mountain days were tainted.

The real question here is about the uci's testing regimen. Was ricco's accepted high hematocrit ever natural? Why wasn't he caught before? I'm curious what numbers were actually involved.

I can assure all the bike racing fans that you certainly don't have to worry about Pcad's high hemocrit level. Pcad may be pack fodder, but he is clean pack fodder.
Besides, they're not doing dope testing in the NY City Master's races. Actually if they tested the Prospect Park peloton after 10 laps through the ganga smoke cloud on the hill on Saturday morning, we'd all test positive for marijuana. It's a Peloton Contact High thanks to the local Rasta boys and their Sat AM Spleef Sessions.
