Velodrome about to happen in SC (help!!!)

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Velodrome about to happen in SC (help!!!)

Okay folks, fire up your juice. A group in Charlotte, NC and the surrounding areas, has raised a pile of money and had land donated to them by a developer to build a 250m concrete velodrome in Rock Hill, SC.
The group is called the Carolina Velodrome Association.
https://www.carolinavelodrome.org/index2.html

They have the support of the local community, the developer and most of the Rock Hill City Council. There are a few hold-outs with concerns.

This is where you come in...
Email or call the Rock Hill City Council members and voice your support for this project.

https://www.ci.rock-hill.sc.us/dynSub...D=3&pLinkID=79

Follow the link to the members of Council and the Mayor.

This will be a great thing for those of us in the Southeast as Rock Hill is very centrally located. Also feel free to email to guys at the CVA to ask questions or offer help.

Thanks!!

Mark

I work in the Mayor's office of a town that has a velodrome. I was the first person the Mayor contacted after hearing the proposal. It was green lighted from the start, but I have some interesting stories to tell about the process.

We had a town meeting out there with local residents who were afraid of the noise and traffic. They had NO idea what a velodrome was. One person thought it was an airport for helicopters. Once he found out what it was, he was all for it.
One person came to complain that we were taking habitat away from fireflies. I'm not making this us. And while she has a point, it hasn't been an issue.

One woman demanded that I be fired for supporting the project at a council meeting. She felt that I had no right as a City employee to have an opinion about it even though I'm a resident of the town.

Residents had lawn signs saying "save Bloomer Park - NO Velodrome"
(I still have one in the attic of my garage.) They were afraid that traffic would be like Woodstock.

The site has only helped increase attendance in the park. The programs attract families who spend money when they come to town. (A recent survey showed that an average trip to the velodrome can generate $50 per person)

I can talk for hours on this topic. Tell me when the council meeting is. I'll come down.

Rock Hill is just far away enough for me not to care. SC may be small, but I seem to live in point furthest from everything but Hilton Head.

What are the concerns and what strategy can we use to allay those concerns? If we can target our effort at more than just random calls for support surely that might be more useful?

The two councilmembers with concerns are Kevin Sutton and Osbey Roddey. I don't know there particular issues with the project, but those were the names given to me by the CVA.

Mr. Roddey doesn't have an email address, but his phone # is :
803/328-6756

Mr. Sutton's # is :
803/328-1428

Thanks for everyone's help...and pass on the info to your riding circles.

Have you tried the appropriate regional forum?

Or the Advocacy forum?

How about the Fixie forum?

Maybe even General Cycling?

Although there is some cross over in interests, this really isn't about Road Cycling... [Little Darwin ducks]

Um, no...it's not about advocacy, but a facility to use for track riding...

How about the Fixie forum?
See previous answer...

Road cycling gets the most views, therefore I put it here. If you don't any help to give, other than suggesting the obvious, please don't post.

EDIT: It got your thread bumped to the top... SO what's the problem?
