Carrying "a small pharmacy" to help you ride better
From CyclingNews.com:
1) How does a rider carry such a "small pharmacy" without any of his teammates (roommates), team staff (souigneurs), and team management being aware? Surely someone would have seen something in all the packing and unpacking.
2) The last sentence seems extremely odd to me. What does Corti mean by "if he has been doing this behind our backs"? Is he implying that Duenas wasn't doing it, and all of the evidence was planted? That seems far-fetched. Or if Duenas really did do what he was accused of, why would Corti ask "if he has been doing it behind our backs"?
Barloworld rider Moises Duenas, who was removed from the Tour de France after he failed a doping control for EPO, was found to have not just some doping products, but a "small pharmacy" in his room, AFP reported Thursday. Duenas appeared before a French court in Tarbes Thursday to face criminal charges for "use and possession of plants and poisonous substances".
Prosecutor Gerard Aldige described the items uncovered in the rider's belongings, "In the cupboard and among the rider's personal belongings gendarmes found many things including medical material," adding that "syringes, needles and blood bags" as well as "a multitude of other products .. in liquid and sachet form" were seized.
Duenas could face up to two years in prison and a 3,750 euro fine, and because one of the drugs found was not authorized for import into France, he could get an additional three years for illegally bringing it into the country.
Barloworld team manager Claudio Corti, speaking before the start of the 12th stage in Lavelanet on Thursday, denied all knowledge of the discovery and said he had yet to speak to Duenas.
While the Saunier Duval-Scott team withdrew its entire team from the race after Riccardo Riccò failed a doping control, the Barloworld manager Claudio Corti insisted that his team will remain in the race. The squad is down to just four riders after the injuries of Mauricio Soler, Felix Cardenas, Paolo Longho Borghini, and the abandon of Baden Cooke on Thursday's stage.
"If he (Duenas) is the only one implicated then why should the whole team pay for it? We are cooperating and trying to deal with this together," Corti said. "If it turns out that Duenas has been doing all of this behind our backs, then we will start proceedings against him."

it's probably something that is lost in translation. But perhaps they are waiting for the B sample to confirm before they can take action legally.

They pack their own luggage. I'd be willing to guess his roomie saw it or at least guessed correctly, but then there's that whole culture of silence deal. Maybe the roomie was in on it somehow. Maybe the whole team; or at least there was a silent agreement to look the other way.

Actually, I do carry a syringe. It's an epi pen, because I am allergic to bee stings. I want to get a Festina sticker to put on the case.

I believe that's the case, otherwise the Tour organizers would have to find an additional 150 - 200 rooms per night. Well, maybe less depending on how many teams get booted from the race!

Wow, being left behind and ex-communicated by your team must suck. Especially when your usually required to take those things just to remain on the team. Joe Papp knows all too well, its a tragic situation and I feel bad for those guys;

Doping expert stunned by Riccò news
Professor Michel Audran is one of the world's leading experts on blood doping. He is also one of nine independent experts chosen to act as consultants in the formulation of the UCI's biological passport. Daniel Friebe, Procycling features editor, spoke to Audran this morning within minutes of L'Equipe's web site announcing that Riccardo Riccò has tested positive for an EPO derivative after stage four of the Tour de France, the individual time trial around Cholet.

Daniel Friebe: In the last twenty minutes we've heard that Riccardo Riccò has tested positive for an EPO-like product. The early reports suggest that Riccò used CERA or Micera, a so-called third generation EPO. What's your reaction?
Michel Audran: Wow. I'm stunned. I'm amazed they're saying it's Micera, simply because there's no validated test for that yet. The World Anti-Doping Agency is working on a test, but it certainly doesn't exist yet.
DF: What exactly is CERA, or Micera to give it its commercial name?
MA:It's a delayed-action EPO, which has a different molecular mass from EPO. It's only been commercially available since the start of the year. We can tell when someone's used it but we can't declare them positive. In that respect it's like Dynepo, another EPO-like product. We know that Micera was being used on the Giro, so I'm not surprised that it's also turned up at the Tour. But I would be very surprised if they AFLD had declared Riccò positive for Micera, for the reasons I've just mentioned. Maybe they searched Riccò's room and found the product itself...
seems like we`ll be getting a few more +ves this Tour...

^One, read Velonews, various rider's diaries will from time to time reference roommates.
Two, recall the LAnce Chronciles following the Discovery team a few years ago, fair amount of footage inside hotel rooms, alos showing roommates.
Three, I stayed at the same hotel as the I Banesto team during the 2005 TDF. Given the number of people going in and coming out of the same rooms, it looked like they were doubling up.
