Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What to do...need opinions please!

I'm in a quandry and would like other people's opinions. Right now I'd like to get a new road bike, unfortunaly my budget is only really only $600 tops. In the 500s would be better. However I do have my fixie, which is less than a year old and that I could probably sell for $450-500 or so. I really do enjoy it though.

So...my decision is between the two options: Buy a $550 dollar used road bike and keep my lovely fixed gear.

Or...sell the fixed gear and get a $900 used road bike.

slkdfjadaslk. I'm quite torn.

I guess what I'm asking is will the benefits of spending the extra $400 on a road bike outweigh the negatives of having to sell a bike?

Any opinions? $500 used bike and a fixed gear, or only a $950 dollar used bike?

sell the fixed gear. 950 will get you a LOT more bike. then down the road you can pick up another fixed gear. trust me.

The problem is, $950 can get you a nice bike, but you are forgetting all the expenses of all the gear you really do need for road riding. Unless you are just cruising to the coffee shop, you are going to need shoes, helmet, gloves, bibs/shorts, extra tubes, pump, etc etc etc. These items will cost you a bit even at used price.

I say keep the fixed gear and pick up an awesome used bike for $550 or less. I'd say my bike is pretty awesome and it was $500.

Right, thanks. I have all those (thankfully). Ive been cycling since I saved up for my first real bike when I was in junior high.

(actually...I do need a new helmet after smashing mine in a collarbone snapping mtb accident, but we'll ignore that for now)

I might want to race, if that helps.
