Any teen bikers out there?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any teen bikers out there?

I am 16 and was wondering, does the younger generation take part in cycling as well?

But believe me, part of me sometimes wishes I had chosen basketball or something. Road cycling is not an ideal sport for young people (at least when talking high school age), for a large number of factors. I could probably write an essay.

Yeah, but then you would feel like you were in high school or something.

I'm 15 and constantly get trashed about the "spandex". But hey I love it, and wouldn't give it up for anything.

Well I'm 15 and I commute everywhere on bike, if that counts. But I'm building up my own road bike in these coming months as well(Just bought a frame)! I'm kind of new to this stuff so I really don't know too much about it, but I'm hoping to really get into it. If you're talking about other people at my school, they don't- they're into "other"(Read: nothing) things.

haha very happy to see the responses already on this topic, I am turning 16 and getting into it all once I get my bike and such in spetember. I can see what you mean by not an ideal sport for young people, but I think it is cool spandex or not I will be doing it for myself.

I just turned 20 and have been cycling a little since I was 18, found that not many young people are in it. Seems like I'm starting to hang out with an older crowd now. No big deal though, I can get a beer post-ride.

I'm 18. I try my best to not ever wear my spandex kit in front of my friends as they are the type to go EWWWWWWW!!! and run away. Yes, immature indeed.

I'd agree that road cycling isn't the greatest sport for high school kids because of the whole "I wish I had a better... [bike part]" syndrome where you feel inept riding on the same roads as 40 year olds with Zipp'd Cervelo SLC-SL's and such. Always fun to pass them though. Money can't buy youth.

How many of you all race? I think I'm going to do my first race on August 30. I'm stoked, and can't wait. Although I still have a little bit of training to do before then. I think I'm going to get dropped by the Cat 5s but I don't care.

Also I can understand the whole quest for the best bike thing, I mean personally I feel like I always need to upgrade everything, it is only natural =P

I'm 18, just picked up my first roadie about a month ago; however the sidewalks and roads can be awful around my area in town, so I've picked up a fair amount of flats, limiting my cycling ~_~
