random stats, highest HR for a longer period

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

random stats, highest HR for a longer period

I am dork, and I like numbers. I was looking over the stats of one of my races last weekend. The race kicked my ass, but I did place pretty good.

The last lap, 2:10 for 1.04 miles my average HR reached 193, with a max of 199. I felt like I was going to faint after that. Average for the 20 mile crit was 180bpm. My LTT is 171bpm.

I hit 208 during the sprint in on my last 5k race. Wasn't for a long period of time though. I can't seem to get my heart rate up as high on a bike as I can on my feet.

In a race I did about 2 months ago my avg HR over 3 hours was 181bpm. That's one beat below my LT. Hardest race ever.

As per the math when you said 1 min 21 seconds per mile... this would be an average speed of 44 mph right.

That is extremely fast.... Where was this? What kind of terrain?

I've had crits avergae 195-198 heart rate for an hour. Over 200 for about 10 minutes stretches (i.e. a climb), with a max of 217 on the bike, more like 220 running.

I can do 181 bpm for about 6 minutes at a time, and it doesn't feel very nice. You people are freaks. That's it. I'm selling my road bike and spending the money on panniers, fenders, mirrors, SPD sandals, a Camelbak, and some other Fredtacular goodies for my hybrid.

Hmm your right. For some reason, my Ascent software says duration is 1:21, but my garmin training center says 2:10 for 1.04 miles for the last lap which = out to 28.7 mph (this was a very technical crit) we were flying.

You can't compare HR's like that. Your max and LT HR is likely much lower, so it would be harder for you to hold the same HR. BUT HR, as an absolute number, doesn't matter. What matters is HR as a % of your max, and how much power/weight you can put out at a particular HR. Max HR is genetic and not an indicator of fitness, and someone with a high HR could easily get theirs really high but not necessarily put out much power. As you get fit, you will be able to put out more and more power for any given HR.

Edit: to answer the question of the thread, recently I did a hill climb in a group where I rode off the front and averaged 180bpm for just over 12 minutes, with a max of 185. The highest HR I've ever seen was 189 (in a race) and my LT is around 165. My average for the whole climb was 174 for 17 minutes and my power was roughly 4.6 W/kg. I know I've done TTs where I averaged ~175 for half an hour or so.

UMD is dead on. % of heart rate is pretty comparable. So, my max hr is 179 (resting below 50 bpm). Anytime I hit 93% I go anerobic and the clock starts ticking till I explode. So, the OP did 97% max hr for 1:21 ... yea that's a guaranteed popper and a giant effort. My biggest effort was 93% of max for 6:42 at the end of a 4 hour 34 min century.

I'm also a flaming numbers geek (engineer).

Oh yeah, yesterday I averaged 185/max 188 (97%/99%) for 2 minutes on an "attack" on a lunchtime hammerfest ride.
