Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Repair stand and carbon

I got a Park Tool repair stand (Pcs 9 I think) last night for my b-day and I am concerned with using it with carbon. I have a carbon frame and seat post and I am not sure I feel comfortable clamping my post, and definetely not my frame. I guess an option would be to get a cheap post and swap them out everytime. Not ideal. Is anybody else dealing with this issue?

Park tool race stand is the solution, they are cheap (fairly) but obviously more expensive than clamp stands. I feel the race stand is more secure. Your bike is resting on it's bottom bracket and attached to the stand by means of either drop out. After using that stand I cannot go to using anything else since it all feels sloppy.

You can clamp the seatpost (if it's round) like any other. Just don't get silly about it.

+1 to cheap seatpost

you'll probably be extending your seatpost anyway to clamp it. Might as well replace it with something you have no chance of destroying.

You shouldn't have any problem if you clamp on the seat post. If you are really worried though, wrap a hand towel around the post and clamp around that.

I've been clamping to carbon seatposts for years with no problems. I put a terry cloth hand towel between the jaws and the tube to prevent scratches but that's the only precaution I take.

You can clamp on the tob tube too with a hand towel or piece of cloth. No biggie. I prefer doing this than put more stress on the seat post clamp.

I do too. No explosions yet. Just don't crank on it...

your lbs does it, the shop i work at does it...if it cant stand to be clamped in a work stand it probably cannot withstand your weight riding it.

Seriously, how do you think the seatpost is attached to your frame? Go ahead and clamp it.
