Post Photos of Your Other Gear Obsession!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

you play paintball? I use to play too. Very expensive hobby... It's actually more expensive than road biking, if you can believe that.

Haaaa. Here was my thought sequence when I looked at that photo: "What the hell are those idiots doing? Climbing on the same toprope? That makes no sense! They have matching outfits... maybe they're a team and this is some new kind of climbing I've never heard of... maybe it's some kind of trust fall deal..."

Now I see who the idiot is. That picture is frickin awesome and I want one of myself.

The Point - I am old as ***** and times have changed.

Another point - punk rock was old back then...dude.
Sorry, that was said in jest, but I guess that doesn't always come through in the message boards. No need for the history lesson old man! (Also kidding; we're probably not more than 5 years apart)

On a more serious note, you are right, the scene has changed, but only to a point. The punk/DIY/hardcore scene has always thrived on yunguns, and you have to admit that there are a lot of straightedge kids involved (even back then). I mean, just look at photonick's photo from a few posts up for a prime example, those kids would never be at a bar show. Punk rock thrives on young, angry kids who stray from the norm and need an alternate way to express themselves, and 21+ shows, if frequent enough, kind of quashes te movement. There were a lot of bands from your scene in that period (Fugazi and all the other Dischord bands) that typically did not play 21+ shows. Even Albany NY (where I was living back then), with it's insane love of tough guy hardcore, rarely had 21+ shows. Of the many, many times I have seen bands like Sick of it All roll through Albany in the 90's, I never saw them play anything that wasn't all ages. Sure, it happens, but usually in larger scenes where they could have a 21+ and follow through with an all ages. Hell, I even played a show with Agnostic Front (one of those bands that's "old as dirt" and that was all ages.

So that's why venues like 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, ABC No Rio in NY, and The Old Fire House in Seattle are so well known - they're all older establishments that promote DIY ethics and an active younger community, so the scene doesn't fizzle out when we all get bored with it four years down the road.

The downside to this is that, to me, the scene is now too sterile, too boring, and that I am way out of touch. I miss the scene where people still put out demo tapes and ****ty cut and pasted zines printed at kinkos was your only means of learning about things happening outside of your town. I'm probably gonna catch a lot of crap for this, but the internet, mp3's and websites like lambgoat.com totally killed off a lot of the excitement that kids used to have at shows.

Anyway, here's to obsolescence!

Edit: I also wanted to say that I'm jealous you were in DC at that time. You must have seen some awesome shows! These days all we have are Rites of Spring clones.

I will second paintball being more expensive than Cycling. Somehow I managed to get involved and play for 4 years of college. I revently sold off most of my paintball gear, and now I have the craving to play but all my pb budys are in FL.

Oooh. I'm going to go at least once before I start graduate school! I won't have the money for it after that... It's rediculous because resale values for paintball gear is astronomically low and it costs at least $60 just to play, not including the cost of driving an hour to and from the park. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

This arrived in my shop as rough-sawn jatoba. Designed with my wife, I did all the milling, building, staining, finishing, and installation. No gear pics, but we're talking about everything from a No. 7 to a PSI dust collector (we've since finished the remodel with tile and carpet):

I'm not an astrophotographer, visual only, but this was my first and only attempt at taking a photo of something through my Dob. The simulation helps you identify subtle detail in the photo:

Haha, I kind of thought that might have been what you were seeing, but I wasn't sure! It's ok. These photos aren't incredibly difficult to make. You set up a tri-pod, have a competent friend snap, and then use some photochop skills to mesh them and viola!

Also, I used to play paintball (had a decent spyder) but as I got older, I noticed that in my neck of the woods, the rednecks love to call the kid with dreads all sorts of lovely names and just team up on him. Kind of lame, and painful (especially when they'd up their FPS juuuust for you). It wasn't even the kind of thing I could bite the bullet and become better at, especially when the matches were rather expensive on a 16 year old's budget. I still have the gun and get pleasure out of shooting it at random objects.

Photography:

Canon 40D with 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. I also have a 580EX II flash. I want to buy the 10-22mm wide angle next, but I just spent $4000 on my other hobby (cycling) so it will be awhile.

Scotch:

Currently the only bottle I have, thanks to cycling and photography. I'm probably going to buy a bottle of Glenlivet 18 Year sooner or later.

Graphic Design:

The only reason I consider this an expensive "hobby" is because I've invested money in school, and because I purchased my MacBook. Tons and tons of Prismacolor colored pencils and markers have put quite a dent in my wallet as well.

That's all I've got. Being a college student/bartender at 22, I can't afford to be interested in anything else that costs money. Heh.

I'm getting that itch too. I'll be down to get a game together. Anyone else? (sorry to move off topic from this thread).

(Not mine, though I do have a XXX-NT and a fun little 4x4 truck I got cheap and fixed up. Can't recall the type, it's in the closet though..)

My only other costly hobby, though for a reason I can't quite conjure it's on hiatus. Probably while I work out school and biking.
