Where people focus their critical eye is in weight. My tektro brakes are 184 grams per wheel while DA04' brakes are 157 by comparison. While the weight savings would be nice, I bet I could lock my Tektro brakes up as quickly as I would a set of DA. If indeed there is a difference (perhaps in ability to modulate force) and one wanted to capture the sensitivity or force of a higher-end brake, I would concentrate first on changing pads. The Tektro's are very good brakes. -mark |
I have a tekro front brake on my fixed gear bike, it works well when I need it to.. They are slightly heavier but not anything extreme. And for the price how can you argue, I picked up a set for $35.

They work fine, but do look like what they cost. They come on a lot of bikes and I have never had problems with the road bikes. Their linear pulls have given me some reach issues, even with the wide spacers on the tire side the arm came very close to the tire.

I have Tektro brakes on my Raleigh R800 roadie. If your value minded like I am, get the Tektros. They weight a hair above Ultegra, works the same, and are almost half the price. The only big difference is the Tektro brake I have does not have a quick release mechanism so loosen the brakes when I want to change my wheel. Not a big problem for me though.

I remember comparing the price on Tektros versus Shimano Sora and the Tektros were CHEAPER!!! These prices were at my LBS. The Tektros were around $28 and the Sora was $35!!!
Get the Tektros. Miyataphile |
1: DA (maybe cuz they cost more) 2:tektro rx40 (maybe cuz they cost less) 3:ultegra 4:105 in that order
I can not notice any difference in the first 3 with the same type pads. the 105s are a bit touchy and somewhat spongy out of a 40 mph downhill roll (the 105s actually made me nervous) I use the rx40s on my TT bike and they slow me down just fine.... all dual-pull calipers should be able to lock-up..amazing how some people measure a brakes performance by them being able to lock up... I like the anti-lock feature better, locking em up doesnt slow you down..just makes you loose control. |
Just to clarify - the Tektros are available both with and without quick releases... and, FYI, the Nashbar-branded brakes are all rebadged Tektros.

Tektro dual pivots are the last components from the originals on my bike. Everything else is Ultegra and I've been keeping an eye out for a good deal. But my enthusiam has kind of waned for getting the Ultegra brakes. The Tektros have never been a problem.

I am happy with my Tektro brakes. At least I am now that they are properly adjusted and have better pads on them.

I have these: http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm?PageID=30&SKU=BR7301
My bike is set up for long reach and Campy doesn't make them, so I went with the Tektros. They've worked out quite well and they honestly look good enough to not be an embarassment to the rest of the Campy Centaur/Chorus group. |
