Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

08 Look 555 or 09 566?

I am looking at these two bikes, 555 https://www.lookcycle.com/products/?m=7&l=en and the new 566 https://reviews.roadbikereview.com/bl...-bike-preview/ The 566, I would want is available with 09 Rival for a MSRP of $2499 and the 555 is available with Ultegra SL for a MSRP of $2999. My LBS is pretty sure they can get me a "good" deal on the 555 due to Look trying to get rid of that inventroy because its being replaced with the 566. I should know early next week on pricing for the 555 and delivery time for the 566.

Have any of you guys seen or heard anything on the 566? I am not quite sure that I am sold on the look of it, with the dramatic drop in the top tube and all. Any opinions on the 555? I am coming from a CR1 and looking for something a little more comfortable but that can still be used for fast training rides as well as occasional races. I appreciate any help or insight!

Outside of what's been leaked about the 566, can't help you with the new bike. Having ridden a CR1 and owning a 555 I can tell you (at least with Mavic OPs 3x on each) it has a much more forgiving ride and neutral handling than the CR1.

Thanks Ramjm 2000! I will take your AF opinion and overlook your AU one.

The CR1 and 555 have similar geometries. If youre happy with your position on the CR1 and just looking for a more forgiving frame, the 555 might be for you. I have an 07 555 and love it however I'm really excited about what I've seen an read on RBR about the 566. On paper at least, the shorter TT and taller HT on the 566 would be a better fit for me(long legs/short torso). Jensonusa has a decent deal on the 555 if your a 55cm.

Personally, I think $3K for a 555 with Ultegra is a bit much. Especially since you can get the frame for as low as $800 these days; also, I remember seeing places getting rid of their inventory of built 555s for something around $1800. I can't comment on the 566 in terms of performance or fit - all I can say though, is that I prefer the more classic look of the 555. The 555 is an awesome ride too.

Thanks for the feedback GreenD. I don't mind the position at all on my CR1 so that is "comforting" to know. I had actually heard about the 566 at my LBS last Friday and then found much more info at RBR to go along with it. They are checking availability right now on both the 555 and 566. I would like to have the Rival equipped one if the wait isn't TOO long. Also thanks for the heads up on Jenson, that seems to be about the best deal I have found although I have found it at one other place with free shipping which would save $40. I would like to think my LBS will at least be able to match these prices?

Were these 08 555's for $1800? I have seen a couple of places selling 07's with 105 for $1800 but so far $2300 is the best I have seen on the 08 with Ultegra SL. My LBS seems to think they will be able to get a better price on a 555, if available, due to Look clearing inventory for the 566. I was just posting MSRP's although that isn't what I will be paying...

I honestly don't remember - they might have been '07s.

Economics is always a big factor. I ride an '06 555 and it is an outstanding combination of ride compliancy and performance. I got my 555 at the end of '06 on close out for $1100. A wonderful frame. That said, I am less of a fan of the '07 555. Enter the new 566 for '09. Look is smelling the coffee. They are now offering an updated and cost effective version of the newish 585 Optimum which has a geometry that most average cyclists would appreciate....but at 555 prices. This is the way it should be...lower level frame with friendly geometry and nice compliancy but still stiff enough to be fast. If you study the new 566 it is a master piece...ideal melding of vertical compliance, lateral stiffness and friendly geometry for those that don't race but like spirted group riding. The 566 will likely be my next frame but I am in no hurry as the 555 is superb. To me, Look trumps Cervelo because they have similar performance without the harshness.
