Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help with gloves

Alright, I've narrowed down to two, but I'd like to see if any of you have used these. I had some PI gel-light tour gloves that HURT. (The gel bruised my hands.)

I'm looking at the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. glove.

And the Sugoi RS glove.

Thoughts, please. LBS doesn't carry either for me to try on.

Cheers!

No one?

How about full finger vs fingerless for sweat/grip control?

I wear full finger gloves for commuting and some crits. The control issue is a bit of a wash. As to your options presented, I'd favor the Sugoi, but haven't tried them. My experience with P.I. gloves is they don't hold up well (like seemingly everything else).

I have the Sugoi RS short finger version. I'm happy with them. I like the slip onstyle vs the velcro closure.

Thanks.

I know that "full finger vs half finger" sounds like a dumb newbie question, but until now my only glove use has been full finger in cool to cold weather. I'm only now looking into summer gloves due to the sweat and humidity combo on long rides starting to kill my ability to hold onto my handlebars. There was a recent ride that underscored this point for me.

Back in Utah the humidity was lower, and this wasn't such an issue, so I never wore gloves in summer.

I got PI pro full gloves for the cooler temps and the half finger gloves for mid summer. They wear very well and are the best I have owned so far and I am a believer of PI.

I have PI Cyclone gloves for winter. They have held up well. Their summer gloves do not hold up well IMO.

Different gloves fit different people differently. Try them on. Buy what fits you and the way you hold the handlebar. Some people like padding in different places. Some people don't like padding.

Totally agree with you. This wasn't so much of a problem before. Now I'm stationed in the middle of nowhere, and the LBS hardly carries anything at all. To try on either of these gloves would be a special order, and I would be on the hook for shipping even if I don't buy.

So I'm in the unfortunate position of asking clothing questions online.

I doubt you'll get much useful information over the internet. Every glove from a major brand probably has some fans. You may just have to buy one of each brand until you find one that fits you well. If you know in advance that you prefer more padding or less padding or padding in certain areas only, you can try studying the online photos.

I found the PRO inserts to be very uncomfortable. A piece of rubber on your palm just feels odd. I exchanged them for the PI Pittards Carbon leather glove which I find waaay more comfortable than the PRO gloves.

I would avoid any PI summer gloves (the cold-weather gloves they make aren't bad). They literally come apart at the seams before your eyes. Sugoi stuff is usually decent, but I personally haven't tried their gloves. Surely, they can't be as bad as PI.

I suggest you go with whatever the LBS has....buying gloves without trying them on is a crapshoot. I would rather have a mediocre glove that fits well than a top glove that doesn't. Ditto for shoes, btw. And bikes too!

Full finger v 3/4 or half: I wear full finger year round (in 100 degree heat as well). In the 3/4 or half gloves, when my fingers sweat, it gets between them and get slimy and annoying. No issues with the full fingers.
