Did you lose a bunch of weight by cycling? Post your pics here!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yea, I know...

That race was in the spring and I won it with a 20 mile solo effort, the other pics were taken last month. Comparing both I can see I made some gains

I've seen that shot before and I love it man. The look of fear on everyone else's face is classic.

If I had to toe the line next to you I would be all looking for you in the corners waiting for you to steam roll right over me.

I gained a lot weight when I started cycling. I started cycling at the same time I quit smoking. I was 5'11" 169# with 32" waist forever while choking down cigarettes.

As soon as I quit I gained 25 lbs.. like in 2 months. Couldn't ride far enough to make up for the loss of metabolism from the nicotine due to NO aerobic capaicty.

Been working on losing that for the last 10 years Making some progress lately.

Authority, please? Not that more isn't better, but that statement is as ridiculous as the "almost no body fat" statement.

10 miles a day for an average rider is probably 40 mintues. Less time than that for an experienced or faster rider, of coures, but that isn't the point. Weight loss is the point. Assuming it's a decent effort, 40 minutes of burning calories compared to 0 minutes from before the riding started (making an assumption there) is going to have an effect. I have never heard anybody say before today that you have to average an hour a day if you want exercise to be meaningful. In fact, the time I usually hear is 15 or 20 minutes.

I would use a personal example as a rebuttal, but I make your hour a day average threshhold. Bah.

The point is that while 300 miles in a month seems like a warm up to you, it's big news to a new rider.

The government used to recommend 90 minutes a day of exercise as the minimum. I just searched and they seem to now recommend 30-60 minutes. 10 miles a day would satisfy that I suppose (I was basing my earlier statements off 90 minutes), but its not going to do much for losing weight. I'm just saying, that if the person is wondering why the pounds aren't melting away, 10 miles a day is not going to do it. Obviously, if there is other exercise as well, that would help too. Note that 15-20 minutes usually refers to strength training workouts, not cardio. Cardio takes more time to affect your body.

In April of '07 I topped out at 6' 288#. I was 37y/o I was on cholesterol and HBP meds and was heading towards being diabetic. For whatever reason I had a moment of clarity and decided I needed to change. I joined a gym and started doing cardio/circuit training to the tune of about 1.5 to 2hrs daily with occasional second workouts later in the day. I also counted calories religiously. I didn't start cycling until about halfway through the summer on my old bike.

There is a reservoir in my area that is popular among cyclists and I always thought it would be cool to bike around it. I managed that before the end of the year (it's about 19miles), now I look at that ride as a warm up.

Over the fall and winter I took up running as well (my knees are in surprisingly good shape considering the weight I carried around on them for years), now I can clear 8 mi's running and I will be doing my first century in September as well as my first 5 k (I'm hoping to break 25 minutes).

A year+ later I am down to 198 (another 15 to go?), I'm off both meds and my rhr went from about 80 to 48. The best part is I've had several former students come back for alumni events and quite literally not recognize me (I always get a kick out of that).

He's not quite correct. That level of exercise is likely to burn in the neighborhood of 350cals/day which combined with a 2000cal/day diet would likely result in a one pound weightloss every 10 days (3500=1lb). That's only 3lbs/mo but it's better than the alternative.

My guess is that diet is the issue, that's the tougher part of the equation for most of us.

I dunno, 450 mi @ ~30 kcals/mi is ~14k kcals or ~4 lbs fat. Negates improvement in resting metabolism. I personally rode maybe 2 rides of ~25 mi each weekly the first month I began riding and lost about 10lbs. RHR dropped 10 bpm. Now to folks like umd, 450 mi/mo would be a joke, even in 4 feet of snow, but then gain, there is your average rider...

5'10"...went from 180 to 170 in a couple of months. Resting heart rate went from high 60s to low 50s. I think what might be helpful is if people start posting exactly what they do to lose the weight so others can follow a plan that works. I try to eat as much fruit as possible and I take a lot of long walks in addition to riding. Since I've learned here that mashing a hard gear for as long as possible isn't the best approach, I think I'll be able to ride every day instead of every fews days like I've been doing since my legs won't need to recover quite so much.

I would wager that those people who are riding a lot and not losing weight are consuming too much in the way of "recovery" food and drinks instead of just drinking water and eating normal food afterward. If you are an elite athlete training multiple times a day you might need to recover your glycogen before your next workout, but replacing all of the calories you just burned is going to help with weight maintenance, not weight loss.

I'm pretty thankful that you guys set me straight about mashing vs spinning. I never realized how taxing it is to spin at even 80-85 rpm for a long time compared to 60 rpm. As of 6/6/08, my hemoglobin was at 15.1 g/dl and my hematocrit was 45.2%, so I feel like I have the building blocks but I just need to keep at it. Right now I am really feeling the cardiovascular strain by mile 10, but I'm hoping it will improve soon. I think I'm going to start tracking my progress by measuring RHR instead of weight, though it was nice to lose an inch off the waist.

1 POUND, 2 months of mostly commuting, 600 miles and I lose an average of 1 pound, really!

Why, I,ll tell you why, cause I eat 3X as much food now, damn. Is my heart stronger and lungs healthier? yeah, just need to cut back on the good stuff, hoowah!

28 years old, 217 down to 185 (most recent weigh-in a couple days ago) since Feb.

Clean eating, lifting 3-4x/week & riding as much as my schedule allows has worked for me. Looking to get into the low 180's by September & then maybe shoot for the 170's.

Told the wifey my goal was to hit 180 & then it was time for a new bike/frame...(currently using my old 92 Cdale 3.0 to get me there.)

Went to college in Fall 2005 at 5'5", 150lbs, carrying some extra weight to start with. Gained the Freshman 15 (ish) that year, got up to 165lbs by the end of the year. I'm not only short, I'm built pretty small (that's not what I told people at the time, of course), so that was A LOT of extra weight for me to carry. I've been riding my bike on long rides on the weekends, as well as as my primary means of transportation in Santa Cruz and San Francisco. Since last June, I've lost tons of weight and gotten into decent shape, going from 165lbs to about 130lbs without really trying to, mostly just as a consequence of riding every day. I didn't realize I was losing weight until people started commenting on it. I still have a few more to lose, but those won't come so easy. We'll see.

The only downside is, now I need new clothes. I now have trouble finding jeans in my (new) size (29x29), all of my shirts are baggy and my old sweatshirt (size small) looks like I could play basketball inside of it.

All I know is I'd be grabbing his wheel and getting one hell of a draft, that is if I could hold it....Of course I couldn't return the favour since my 140lbs frame wouldn't provide much wind protection if any...

I lost my first 20lbs or so by brisk walking everyday....30 minutes during the week and 60 minutes on the weekend...

I also altered my diet, but it does work...

When you are overweight and doing nothing, just getting off the couch is going to help...

You are probably right about this. 1 hour a day will just maintain your weight. That's why probably I am still fat. I need to start cycling at 5AM until 7:30.

However I am getting stronger and I quit worrying about this weight loss and believe it will come when needed. I only lost 11 lbs since September 2007 and probably I won't get back to 137 when I was 30 and racing cross country skiing. I am a vegetarian so I know for the most part I am eating healthy but sometimes kids put a number on you. I also like to cook and don't worry about lowfat this and that. I cook to taste. I did pass a scooter yesterday coming down route 165 from Placitas NM. I was doing 42 when I did. The scooter man probably did not have the guts to fast also but cars were honking at me to cheer me. It was downhill but not too much like 2% grade but I was grinding out 52X12. Once in traffic on route 550 I was riding with a Harley beside me drafting a semi. I had to give up once it got uphill and the speeds got past 30 mph but the harley dudette was encouraging me and gave me a thumbs up as a faded to 18 mph. This is the fastest 22 mile ride for me and it did have 5 miles of roller and a 3 mile climb. I was home in 1'10" and that includes stoplights. I stopped 5 times. And in spite of that I probably did not loose anything at all not even a gram of fat.
