Shoulder discomfort?

I just began my biking regimen over the past week. I have my bike fitted properly to me and it felt great test riding it prior to purchasing.

However, I noticed maybe not the first time out but this past ride of 20 miles that my shoulders felt strained at times... I'm wondering if it's just my muscles getting used to the position that my arms have been in? (never rode a road bike before this).

Or if it's a fitting issue?

Please advise. It's definitely not a crazy pain, it's more like a "discomfort'

Thanks in advance

Might or might not be a fit issue. More likely, you're just trying to do too much too fast before you're body has accustomed to the riding position. You may also be too tense on the bike. Relax your hands, arms and shoulders when you're riding.

One risk you from Bike Forums and others like it is that you get the impression that riding 20 miles is nothing. So people start out riding many miles right away without gradually building up to it. Every ride doesn't have to be an epic one. Just riding 10 miles every day but one a week is still a lot more cycling than most people actually do.

Ill jump on this thread...

I just started on a road bike this past weekend too but am not new to riding. I was fitted to the bike as well, its a new bent over riding position (obviously) and Ive started wearing a helmet.

When I was on it Sunday night, I did prob 8-10 miles when typically I would do about 17+ on my other bike. Im easing into the new ride position cuz like was mentioned...I know i'm tense. Ive had some neck/shoulder ache afterwards just like the OP. Most likely from having that extra weight on my melon and not relaxing enough during the ride.
I expect it to get better. I ride about 3 times a week...
