Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rebel Style, or Totally Lame

I have a Giro Havoc that I have used for several years when mountainbiking. Just purchased a new road bike, but not wanting to drop more cash for a road helmet. So, does roadie with a MTB helmet = a case of keepin' it real gone bad?

Eh, I ride my road bike with a Giro Havoc. Works fine for me.

Of course you get negative road bike bling points, but who cares? Eventually I'll convince my girlfriend to buy me a sweep-R...

Well, I didn't use all my bling points up on a bike from BD. So I guess that I have a few to spare. Now about those baggy shorts in my closet...

Not familiar with the Havoc, but if it has a visor, you might consider removing it. Not for style points, but because some folks find its harder to see up the raod riding in the drops with a visor.

Oh and you do realize that the foam in MTB helmets is optimized to absorb impact from trees, and dirt, and offers very little protection from asphalt.

I am not one to think Bling has anything to do with riding so won't comment on that. I do find that riding my road bike with an MTB helmet that has a visor installed is hard on my neck. My position on the road bike is much lower, especially when I am down in the aerobars and I have to rotate my head way up to see out from under the visor. I just remove the visor and use the helmet that way.

All helmets have to go through the same safety standards, and while it may not be optimized for asphalt, it should still give you plenty of protection!

I did take off my visor on the Havoc though, it was just plain annoying on the road bike.

It's a helmet, no one cares what you wear.

I'm probably better off putting the money into a better pair of shoes. The ones I have are too narrow and make my feet numb.

I got a cheap Bell Alchera to serve as my road helmet. Hard to ride in the drops with a visor. You could always get a Giro Pneumo for double duty.

That would be a good idea. You can (technically) ride without a helmet, but without shoes... a little bit tougher.

He was kidding about the last bit.

Road and mtb helmets are exactly the same in terms of protection. The difference is the visor, and in some cases the size and number of vents.

Yes, yes they are. I have two Bell helmets. An Influx (mountain) and an Alchera (road), that's how they are marketed. They are identical helmets, with different paint jobs. And the Influx came with a visor. No lie. Both fit like a glove though.

hmm... I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the only difference between road and MTB helmets is marketing...

Remove the visor and it'll be OK.
