Rival v. Centaur: which one?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rival v. Centaur: which one?

I'm building up another road bike, because. Well i won't even dive into MY story behind it. I'm tired of shimano's STI's getting larger and larger, and the idea of internal routing appeals to me very much. ive run ultegra and dura-ace and 600 and 105 in teh past, but haven't touched campy within the last 6 years or so. I'm making the change right here and now. My options are full Rival or full Centaur. Convince me why i should choose one over the other, i would liek to hear peoples opinions

I think a centaur groupset is cheaper than Rival.

Centaur is about the same in weight, but has more options. Alloy or carbon crank. Brifters are carbon vs alloy. Besides, I kinda like the cleaner look of the Ultra-Torque crank vs the SRAM/FSA/Shimano type.

Take your pick.

Just my preference.

'09 Rival is supposed to be the same price as '08 and will feature carbon shifters along with a host of other changes. That's what you should consider in your comparison.

I'd go with Rival. I really like how it functions.

honestly, i'd wait for the '09 groups to hit. rival is getting zero loss shifting, adjustable reach, carbon levers, front ring trim and is dropping in weight. i suspect '09 centaur is going to be nearly identical to current record.

Where's Ravenmore? He had Force and switched to centaur/chorus/record/frankencampy. He might have some good input for you.

09 chorus will be nothing like current record. 11 speed, new shifter ergonomics, no g springs.
that said, 09 rival looks very good. i'd say it's a toss up- either way you'll get the goods.

I called my local B&M Performance Bicycle to see if they had any Campy Centaur cranksets in stock. After several attempts at getting the guy on the phone to understand that I wasn't asking for a Suntour chainring, I realized that he had never heard of Campagnolo!

I gave up and ordered a Sugino instead on-line.

09 Rival looks terrible compared to the current one. But it is getting reach adjustable levers, which may or may not matter to you. Carbon levers are pretty pointless, although they don't get cold like alloy ones do. Upside of Sram is that you can run Shimano cassettes. I'd probably get Centaur anyway.

i said as soon as sram came on the scene- wait a season or two, let em work out the kinks. i'd be seriously bumming if i'd bought a rival or force equipped bike in the last year.

patron at REI checked out my Centaur bike as I arranged for it to be serviced. He pointed at the thumb-shifter and asked "whats this...the brake?". Aproned REI mech looked at it, hummed, looked at it for a while more, and agreed "yeah, I think it operates the brakes".

(i took my bike to LBS later that day)

I'm trying to make a similar decision; 09 Rival works for me, so I can keep all my wheelsets; and just generally better wheelset choice since SRAM is Shimano compatible.

I much prefer the feel and function of Campy.

I built my Look bike with Centaur, I have to say, they are outstanding. Nothing has broken yet and all pieces function precisely.

I have been riding the SRAM red gruppo for some time now...get the SRAM! The shifting is awesome, and like you have been hearing the levers will be carbon for 09. If you are going to drop coin on Campy you might as well save up for the super record and turn it up to eleven.

I love Campy's but in the used market, hard to find Campy wheelsets. They also overcharge for Campy stuff. The LBS wanted 100 for a used 8 speed chainring. I moved to 10 speed this year and was able to put a bike together for under 1500 -- with used Zipps and Mavic wheelsets yes 2 wheelsets. My biggest expense was the Rival gruop but worth it. If I went Campy I would not have been able to duplicate this for less than 2500.

Go with SRAM. I have older Rival but even that stuff is good. There are ebay sellers that will sel you Rival for under 600. If you need Zipps 19 out of 20 wheelsets will be Shimano compatible on the bay, craigs, LBS or online.
