Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

which assos model?

after a few friction abrasions on my legs, I decided to make the switch to some bibs. Based on spectacular reviews everywhere, i've decided to go with a set of Assos. Here's my question though, which model and size should I go with? I usually ride between 20 and 50 miles per ride and i'm 5'7" at 143 lbs.

Everyone on here raves about the FI-13 S2 Bib Shorts. They are pricey though. Around $250. Sometimes you can find them cheaper.

Yeah, the FI 13 S2's look really good, but to my dismay they just discontinued that model for the FI 13 S5's which are 300 bucks! oof!

Why not start with some less expensive bibs and go from there? Some of those cheaper ones are quite nice. I could never justify spending what Assos asks for their gear until a few years ago a friend who owns a shop offered me some at cost so I jumped on the offer. I was very disappointed, the Assos bibs ended up being my least comfortable/favorite pair.

Price doesn't always = comfort.

I wear large and am 6' 165.

Personally, for your distance, I think the Assos are not really necessary. If you have the $ and just want the best, then go for it, but I think you should be able to find something half the price that will work just as well. Gore Power, Performance Ultra, Hammer's voler, Sugoi's rs, giordana silver bibs, among others all may be worth considering.

That being said, I tried on all the Assos and decided to go for the cheapest line UNO's. Perhaps I will try one of the others if I manage to wear out all my current bibs but then there will probably be a new model out.

My $$$ bibs are Giordana Forma and Assos FI.UNO S5. I like them roughly equally with maybe a nod going to the Forma's, but, both are better than any other bib I have, some costing nearly the same (Gore Xenon)
