Pro Race 3 durability issue
I'm a longtime Michelin user. Always liked their tires, got good mileage out of them and liked their reasonable price. The Pro Race 3 seemed like a good thing and when I mounted my first pair I thought the ride was great, at least on par with PR2s if not better. I seem to remember Michelin claiming better durability for these tires than PR2s.
Well not exactly.
After 1300 miles my rear tire wore through to the casing. I can't remember having this happen with any Michelin tire. My PR2s and Axial Pros got an average of 2000mi per rear tire and 4000 per front. I tended to replace them when they got too cut up and the rubber had softened to the point where they weren't very puncture resistant anymore. Never wore a PR2 through to the casing, even after 2500 miles on a rear tire.
I'm sure PR3s are great for racing purposes, but they're not durable enough for everyday use like the PR2s were. That's a real shame since Michelin has stopped making the PR2s and haven't come up with a replacement that's suitable for us everyday riders. I'm sad to say I'll need to switch to another brand after all these years.

Consider yourself fortunate, I had one of my first set last 45 miles when the sidewall was sliced by a rock.
This was one day before my first half ironman, luckily I had thrown a $10 cheapie Kenda that came with the bike in the car before traveling to the race. The Kenda held up just fine.
Maybe this would have happened with any wheel, but on my Gatorskins, 2500+ miles and it never happened. The Gators did get a small cut on a cattle guard, shop told me to replace it when the replaced the rim, a couple of 1000 miles later thats exactly what I did.
Now, the PR3s are only for racing.

I only got 5 rides into my set of P3Rs before one died from sidewall failure. Furthermore, while replacing it I already could see signs of tread wear; and that was only after 300km!
I won’t be buying them again.

huh...a couple guys I know upgraded to the PR3s as soon as we got them in and have had no problems with them whatsoever, and have ridden well over 1500 miles on them.

the search function is your friend. Lot's of complaints already documented here on fast wearing Pro3's and some sidewall issues. I squared off a Pro3 at just over 1,000 miles. They do not wear near as well as the Pro2's did.

My Pro3's lasted 1200 miles. Unfortunately, I had a spare pair that I am riding on now. Just ordered Conti 4000s for my next pair. The Pro 3's cut easily and wore quickly. I weigh 168.

I just threw P2R's on my bike, I took my Krylion carbons off after 1200 miles and put them away for the winter. I gotta say the P2r's are slightly smoother maybe a little grippier on the turns but I can't really tell too much of a difference.

Try a switch to Conti GP4000s - great tire and pretty darn durable....I even commute on them!

Don't Bug Me
I am a longtime Michelin user also. I have had sensational luck with the Pro 2s. Ridiculously few punctures and I even managed to nurse 6,000 miles out of one mounted on the front of my Look before I had to change it. I went to Western Bike Works and bought a half a dozen of the Pro 2s when they were selling for about $35 each. Glad I did now, as those should last me for awhile. With all of the negative reports on the Pro 3, I probably will stay away from them.

Yup, I'm on the heavy side.. 6'2" and 200lb, so a lighter rider might get better mileage than me. But even given my weight, PR2s tend to last almost twice as long as PR3s. btw, I haven't had more problems with sidewall cuts or punctures in general than with PR2s. It's just that they wear out so fast!
There's a rumor going around that Michelin will raise their prices this Fall and I'd hate to see people stock up on PR3s without knowing about the wear issue.

I have the Conti's on my bike now. While they do appear to wear very well they do not have the subtle feel of the Michelin. I am going to hit ebay for a few pairs of Pro2's while I can.
