Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Laughing on the Bicycle

Two times today on my solitary 61 mile ride, my mind wandered to something funny, and I started laughing out loud. I couldn't help it. I was tired, and it was funny. If anybody saw me, I probably looked like a complete idiot. A lumbering, laughing idiot on a bicycle.

Does this happen to anybody else?

Happens to me sometimes. However, you can't ask a question like that, and then not tell us what you were laughing at.

Usually before 60 miles. After that a pained expression takes over, no matter what.

You have to understand I was really tired. I was thinking, "I'm taking this century training way too seriously." Then I had this image of riding a century in a bath robe and flip flops, smoking cigarettes the whole damn way, with a supersized bag of Cheese Puffs taped to the head tube.

At the time, that was crazy funny.

I tried to scratch my knee this afternoon. Eventually realized it would be easier if I stopped pedaling.

Ya, that one would have cracked me up too. Great visual!! Thanks. Now it's almost a guarantee, next time i'm drained, I will picture the same thing, and laugh.

It had better... if it didn't, I probably wouldn't ride... hah...

When I'm not alone, it's me and my buddies reciting the script to the Ballad of Ricky Bobby...

The most ridiculous invention ever mind you. Looks so stupid. America is so lazy that they can't even answer their own ****ing cell phone.

I don't know if I laugh much, but the stupid thing I do is talk to the animals...livestock, geese, turkeys...basically anything that isn't chasing me. I pretty much just say hi to them. I don't know why I do it. I'd probably look less foolish if I just rode along laughing for no apparent reason.

Last time I laughed while riding was when this guy looked like he was going to sprint and then stopped pedaling and scratched his calf.
